Perfect for mixing and mastering
Although the market is flooded with digital EQ solutions, nothing quite functions the same as the RP-EQ. Unique in its design, it's aimed at all musicians, producers, mixing and mastering engineers to get the most from their tracks. No matter if you're working on a single track, carving out some honky midrange in your bass or looking to add extra polish to your main vocal track, the RP-EQ remains musical and smooth no matter how you choose to use it.
At the heart of RP-EQ is the ultra-accurate 30-band FFT Spectrograph, which delivers a responsive visual representation of your track or group's frequency response. Selectable in either Line or Bar mode with Left, Right, Stereo and Mid/Side options, you can cater your graphics to your preferred look. Ideal for taking a snapshot of your response, the Spectrograph also features controls for Hold and Release, letting you slow down the decay of the peak lines to see exactly how the adjustments you make transform the frequency response of your tracks.
Fundamentally, RP-EQ is an eight-band EQ where each band features a simple bell curve with extremely wide bandwidth capabilities. Adjusting the bandwidth on Rob Papen RP-EQ can take your EQ move from a simple cut to a surgical, notch cut to effectively eliminate problem frequencies, room nodes or unwanted sympathetic harmonics in your tracks. Flexible enough to cope with the demands of modern producers, RP-EQ offers a Solo option and Mid/Side processing. These additions allow you to hear in isolation your chosen frequency band to hear how it sounds out of context, helping you to remove or accent specific frequency ranges more clearly as well as process stereo tracks by targetting Left and Right channels independently. Although packed with several additions, no compromise has been made in terms of sound quality. RP-EQ remains musical, clear and crisp, seamlessly blending with your source material for a smooth and responsive sound.
Of course, it wouldn't be Rob Papen without the final touches and in this case, RP-EQ offers the signature 'Air' mode. A gentle boost outside of the human hearing range up to 30 - 40kHz with an extremely wide bandwidth. Excellent for lead vocals, you can create shimmering vitality to open up the sound of your singing without adding unwanted harshness. Ideal to be used in conjunction with the main eight-band EQ, adding Air and removing clunky mid-range from an electric bass or even drum shell might be the trick you need to help give your mixes a professional edge.
Shape and sculpt your tone exactly the way you need
Whilst there are a sea of digital parametric EQ plug-ins available, the contemporary sound design and tonal shaping options within RP-EQ put it head and shoulders over your standard EQ design. Offering the option to add vintage flair, harmonics and warmth, a tape-emulated saturation dial can be globally added to the full frequency range both post and pre-distortion. When used in small portions can be ideal for softening extreme boosts in the mid to high-frequency region of an acoustic drum shell or harsh vocal performance. No matter how aggressive your saturation, the Auto-Volume switch predicts the output volume and adjusts it accordingly to ensure you never enter unwanted digital peaking and distortion.
Borrowing cues from synthesis sound design, the RP-EQ also features two analog-modelled multi-mode filters. Four low and high-pass filters, selectable between 12 and 24dB can be used in a traditional sense to filter any excessive high or low-end in your signal or can be used for a more creative effect to add resonance and energy to your signal processing.
Most interestingly, Rob Papen has included a Mono/Stereo splitter function triggered by a frequency threshold. This is where the RP-EQ becomes a vital tool in audio mastering as you can split your mono low signals and stereo high signals into two individual channels, allowing you to process them independently from each other. All these additions are presented in an immaculate interface that defines each parameter with colour, allowing you to quickly identify any changes made in the plug-in.
Far more than an EQ
Whilst the core of RP-EQ is undoubtedly the immaculate EQ functionality, the inclusion of XY modulation sources takes the RP-EQ to near sound-design territory. It would be unfair to just call RP-EQ a reductive EQ, as the inclusion of the XY morphing brings the plug-in to life, setting it apart from the competition. Based around two programmable LFOs, you are able to control the EQ parameters with time-variable XY movements, dynamically altering the character of your sound to a percussive element and much more.
With three modes of operation, you can physically draw in the movement of the XY morphing or plot them to the graph. All manner of unique movements can be made, with each LFO capable of modulating virtually any parameter, shifting the focus from traditional EQ to outright explorative sound design. Not limited to just mixing engineers, the XY morphing encourages you to 'play' with your EQ, becoming more of a focal point within your mix when used to creative effect, helping to engage your listeners with a new experience that keeps them on their toes.
Reviews
"One of the highlights of the RP-EQ is that you can dial in that shiny and glossy top end to your vocals. Also, the saturation that's built-in gives your EDM production that much needed oempf. The icing on the cake is the Mid/Side function to give your leads that bigness." - Rob Fabrie (DJ, Producer, EDM Mastering engineer)
