MIDI Controllers

A MIDI Controller or MIDI Control Surface is a digital device that transmits MIDI data to other devices capable of receiving it. The most common use of a MIDI Controller is to control software instruments used on a computer. Other uses include controlling DAW software or external hardware by sending MIDI CC control messages. This is particularly useful when automating tracks within your DAW, or for controlling the transport controls.

Designs vary from traditional keyboard form, pad-orientated controllers - which are often used to trigger samples or play drum machine software – or those with knobs and faders for use when mixing or tweaking audio signals. Some MIDI controllers are even application specific such as Akai’s APC40 which is directly integrated in Ableton Live software.
