The Harmonica, or mouth organ, is a favourite instrument of performers in a variety of genres - from blues, to folk, to pop songs. In bands the harmonic is often played by the lead singer as an instrumental contrast between vocal lines. Famous players include Bob Dylan, ‘Sonny Boy Williamson and Steve Wonder. The sound is made by blowing through one of a bank of miniature pipes that run through the instrument, producing a reedy, resonant and expressive sound. The pitch can bend between two notes as the mouth moves to different pitches, and vibrato is added by waving the hand in front of the organ, creating an expressive waver on the ends of notes. The dynamic is quite quiet, but very clear and penetrating. Gear4music harmonicas are fantastic value for money - ideal if you are thinking of taking up this instrument as a hobby at home, or if you want to add a new sound to your band! |
