About PRS Hollow Body Guitars
Warmth, depth, richness. These are the acoustic qualities players love about hollow body instruments, and it’s why PRS has embraced the design so enthusiastically in their product lineup.
From the lavish appointments of the Core series to the entry-level yet professional feel of the SE range, PRS has a hollow guitar to meet the needs of any budget or taste. It’s taken a while to get to this point though...
PRS has been crafting semi-hollow and fully hollow guitars since the early 1990s. In those early days, you were restricted to Limited Edition and Artist Series guitars - instruments that commanded hefty price tags!
It wasn’t until 1998 that a PRS hollow design finally stuck: The McCarty Hollowbody. Its enduring popularity has caused it to stay in production to this day, with offshoot models including the Hollowbody I, Hollowbody II, and the intriguing Hollowbody I 12-string (even though it’s no longer in production).
The Core series Hollowbody II is a particularly notable model, a current favourite amongst many guitarists for its acoustic/electric tonal mix and sweet sound profile from a maple top and back, with mahogany sides. Its LR Baggs/PRS Piezo pickup system also covers a huge amount of ground sonically, giving players a wide palette to draw from.
Even better, it’s not only reserved for those with deeper pockets as the PRS SE Hollowbody Standard features the same LR Baggs/PRS Piezo design in a much more affordable package.
In between these two extremes, the S2 Vela semi-hollow offers a new take on the iconic PRS body, merging unique hardware with a chambered build to deliver tangy, punky tones not found anywhere else in the PRS lineup.
