Sitka Spruce & Mahogany Soundboard
The Martin D-18E Retro is crafted from a range of carefully selected tonewoods including, a solid sitka spruce top, and genuine mahogany back and sides. The spruce top will deliver a wide, very usable, dynamic tonal palette. The wood itself is quite elastic in nature, which resonates well whilst remaining strong, and provides a focused, clear sound of deep lows, warm midi-range, and bright highs. The spruce top is balanced out well by the mahogany back and sides, as mahogany is denser and produces a richer tone, with emphasised warmth in the mid and low ranges. Mahogany also contains distinct character of soft warmth, but is well balanced, with a bite of its own. Mahogany is used a lot in the acoustic world, because it is relatively economical, durable, attractive, easy to work with, and resonant. The Martin Retro screams out vintage tones and melodic sounds blended with modern playability, to provide you with an outstanding Martin tone mixed with vintage vibes. The D-18E was based on an original D-18 model from 1937, this is where Martin managed to recreate the exact sweet vintage tone that the 1937 D-18 projects.
The Martin D-18E features a dreadnought body shape, which provides an enormous voice, and maintains overall tonal balance. The dreadnought shape was originally designed for hard pick attack. However through years of superb craftsmanship, Martin have created a stunningly toned, well-balanced dreadnought voice that can handle many genres and styles of play.
Select Hardwood Neck
The select hardwood neck is topped with an ebony fingerboard that provides a bright attack, great sustain, and excellent durability. The neck is sleek, modern, and has a high performance taper for enhanced playability. The Ebony fingerboard and bridge also apply clarity and well defined punch, providing you with iconic Martin tone blended with a satin finish for a smooth playability.
Martin Guitar Playability - ENHANCED
For 183 years, Martin have been at the forefront of guitar innovation and premier craftsmanship, bringing consumers some of the best acoustic guitars possible. The iconic Martin tone is known worldwide and playability has become an important characteristic that sets Martin guitars aside from others within the acoustic world. Martin's manufacturing processes have been perfected by their Plek machines, the Plek process helps Martin guitars maintain their undeniable tone.
The Plek Pro has been developed for use in guitar production factories as a tool that not only does precise fingerboard dressing, but also helps with quality control. The computer controlled device scans and dresses the guitar under actual playing conditions, strung and tuned to pitch for using precise string tension emulation. This machine has been a major break through over the last decade, as its eye for detail identifies exactly what needs to be done for perfect fretwork. The Plek Pro delivers you with perfect results, raises the quality of the instrument, and gives you a beautifully toned, easy to play acoustic guitar.
Forward Shifted X Brace
The Martin D-18E uses forward shifted X bracing, which means the X has been shifted upwards slightly in comparison the standard X bracing. This allows even more room for the top to vibrate, bringing you a richer, clearer tone, with reinforced structure. Bracing is very important for a guitar as it stops it collapsing in on itself and keeps the structure strong and durable.
Stage Ready Martin Equipped With Fishman Electronics
The Martin D-18E Retro comes equipped with the Fishman F1 Aura+ that is chromatic and features an on-board tuner. The sophisticated Fishman Aura has an easy read LED screen, which stays bright and easy-readable both under stage light and outside against bright sunlight. The Aura+ also features three pre-selected blends between acoustic imaging and an under saddle pickup. When you see the 'P' display, the under saddle pickup is active, the '1' display means you have the first acoustic imaging active and the same for 2 and 3. Each one of those aura images has been obtained by using different vintage microphones, which provides you with a true footprint of pre-war acoustics. Once plugged in you will hear your Martin Retro jet off in whole other sonic direction, featuring compression control, EQ for both the aura imaging and the under saddle pickup. You can also blend the aura image and the under saddle pickup for a unique retro tone. The D-18E is ideal for the gigging guitarist and comes with built in anti feedback system for the perfect live performance.
The Martin D-18E Retro was constructed and designed with vintage-retro aesthetics and tone in mind. Whilst its tone comes from the vintage build to provide you with vintage-retro characteristics, Martin have also managed to get creative and finish the D-18E Retro with a vintage appearance. The Martin Retro is finished with an aging toner gloss top to recreate the pleasing pre-war acoustic aesthetic. The mahogany back and sides provide a beautiful natural colouring which contrasts well against chrome hardware. The D-18E projects everything retro via taking aesthetics from pre-war acoustics and bringing the vintage vibe back to the future. Martin have chosen a classic faux tortoise pick-guard to accompany the aging toner top, and old style 18-stripe sound-hole rosette, which projects Martin's vintage vision perfectly.
