About Gibson SG Guitars
The Gibson SG is one of the most recognisable electric guitars in the world, and it has been an iconic symbol of rock and roll for over five decades. Originally introduced in 1961, the SG (which stands for "Solid Guitar") was designed to replace the Les Paul model, which had been discontinued by Gibson due to declining sales. The SG quickly became popular with guitarists of all styles, from blues and jazz to hard rock and heavy metal.
Thanks to its eye-catching double-cutaway design and new thinner, slender body shape, the SG became loved for its exceptional playability. It allows players to reach the top frets with ease for wild soloing and play for hours in comfort thanks to speedy neck profile and slim and frame.
Not only does it play like a dream, but the SG also packs a massive tonal punch through its twin humbuckers, a sound which has made it so prominent amongst rock and metal stars. The earliest models were equipped with the sought after PAF pickups, which boast excellent clarity and sustain.
Today, you can find SG's with vintage PAF style humbuckers, or modern high-gain models for a gnarlier and more contemporary sound. Or, if a more stripped-back vintage cadence is your thing, the SG has several models equipped with P90 single coils to deliver classic tones.
Over the years, the Gibson SG has gone through several different variations, including the Standard, the Special, the Junior, and the Modern. Each model has its own unique features and characteristics, but they all share the same unmistakable SG sound and style, and you can explore that wide range right here at Gear4Music.
