It is played using individual finger strokes, ripples, and snaps to create fast, intricate rhythms and a variety of tones.
One way the Doumbek differs from other percussion instruments is that it often incorporates irregular metric (rhythmic) patterns that are based on "odd" 7, 9, and 11-note groupings instead of the "even" 2s, 4s, and 8s that are common in other musical styles.
In the Middle Eastern percussion section, the Doumbek is joined by other instruments, such as the Zils (finger cymbals) and Riq (high-pitched tambourine with heavy metal jingles).
