Born to be wild!
The extraordinary art of 'Beatboxing' on a saxophone is undoubtedly impressive... But it's not easy. The actual 'slapping' sound is produced by fully closing the reed against the mouthpiece then releasing so it slaps back. This pressure you're placing on the reed often pushes your intonation quite sharp because of the wide tip opening and the distance the reed has to travel. Overall, this style of playing can be extremely tiring for the embouchure.
This is why Derek Brown approached Jody Espina and asked him to produce a mouthpiece to make his life easier. He was already playing on a DV tenor mouthpiece and loved it, but he wanted to take his playing to the next level. He asked Jody to make him a mouthpiece with the same sound and response of the DV, but with a small, classical tip opening. And that's exactly what Jody did.
After many prototypes and testing, the final result is the DV Beatbox mouthpiece. Boasting a small #5 opening alongside a unique facing curve, extended techniques such as slap tonguing and tongue ramming are now effortless to achieve. The tip rail and side rails are also much thinner to produce a quicker response. Finally, the mouthpiece is plated in silver to give a more ringing tone.
Not just for crazy players...
Although it might not seem obvious at first, the JodyJazz DV Beatbox isn't just for those wanting to beatbox. The Beatbox mouthpiece is also a really good choice for classical players looking for a close to home jazz mouthpiece. The small tip opening and the facing curve will feel very familiar to classical musicians, while the shape of the DV mouthpiece will provide the perfect tone for jazz. The Beatbox mouthpiece is also a fantastic choice for alto players wanting to transition over to tenor, similarly because of the smaller tip opening.
Designed with Phi Proportions
The DV mouthpieces use the Phi Proportions to create a perfect design that can deliver a high-quality sound. The Phi Proportion is an equation that is used to find and create perfect harmony between things and is seen a lot in nature and art. JodyJazz has applied this equation in the design of the DV series in order to create a big rich sound from the mouthpiece as well as giving it a chamber that will increase harmonics.
Extraordinary craftsmanship
Using highly sophisticated controlled lathes and mills and finished by hand, this is a uniquely crafted mouthpiece that looks as good as it sounds. With a newly designed facing technology and curve that provides perfection every time and removes the possibility of dead spots in the reed's vibration, the DV also features a second window to allow for the sound wave in the mouthpiece to hit the reed above the bore of the mouthpiece.
