Compressors can be used for a number of tasks within the studio. Their primary use is to add consistency to the dynamic range of specific instruments or sounds. This means to either make quiet parts louder or louder parts quieter so the overall mix is balanced. Compressors are sometimes side-chained to an input source, usually a kick drum or a percussive element, which creates a rhythmic, pulsating sound often found in electronic music.
