Junior drum kits are designed for children ages 4 to 10, enabling younger players to reach pedals and play comfortably. The style of junior kit will depend on the proportions of the child regardless of age, too. By taking this into account you can find a kit that makes them much more comfortable behind the kit.
The main difference is size. Junior kits are smaller in diameter with scaled-down cymbals for an ergonomic setup. Junior kits typically feature a hi-hat and an unspecified cymbal - which can be used as a crash / ride. The volume of a junior kit is far lower too, however we'd still recommend ear defenders.
The standard junior kit is intended for players under 4ft 6’’, with the size of the toms and snare reflecting this. Junior drum sets have smaller sizes compared to regular kits and some junior kits are smaller than others, so shopping for a kit according to the size and age of your child is recommended.
All junior drum kits come complete with everything they need to get started. This includes a stool, sticks, hardware, and cymbals. One recommendation that we would make when buying any junior kit is to purchase ear defenders, as younger ears are much more sensitive to louder sounds.
