About Sandberg Bass Guitars
Sandberg Bass Guitars was founded in 1986 in Braunschweig, Germany, by Holger Stonjek and Gerd Gorzelitz. The brand quickly established itself as a leader in producing high-quality, hand-built bass guitars that offer both precision and personality. Sandberg's dedication to craftsmanship is evident in every detail, from the selection of premium tonewoods to the meticulous assembly and finishing processes.
A cornerstone of Sandberg’s lineup is the California series, which blends vintage aesthetics with modern playability. The California series is available in several distinct versions, each tailored to different playing styles and tonal preferences:
- California VM: This model combines a split-coil pickup in the neck position with a humbucker at the bridge, offering a powerful, punchy tone suitable for rock, funk, and more. The humbucker can often be split, giving even more tonal versatility.
- California VS: The VS model features a classic split-coil pickup configuration, delivering a warm, rounded sound perfect for blues, soul, and classic rock. Its simplicity and rich tone make it a favourite among traditionalists.
- California TT: The TT model is equipped with dual single-coil pickups, reminiscent of a classic jazz bass setup. This configuration provides a bright, articulate sound with excellent definition, making it ideal for jazz, fusion, and funk.
- California TM: The TM model offers a blend of a single-coil pickup at the neck and a humbucker at the bridge. This hybrid configuration delivers a wide tonal range, from smooth, mellow tones to aggressive, biting sounds, catering to diverse musical genres.
Each version of the California series can be fitted with Sandberg’s advanced electronic options, including 2-band or 3-band active EQs, allowing players to fine-tune their sound further. The passive mode is also available, providing a more traditional tone with the flick of a switch.
Sandberg’s commitment to innovation and customisation has made them a favourite among professional musicians, including Ida Nielsen (Prince), Oliver Riedel (Rammstein), and Jamie Mathias (Bullet for My Valentine). Each Sandberg bass is a testament to the company's philosophy: combining traditional craftsmanship with forward-thinking design to create instruments that inspire.
