What kind of bass does Flea use?
The Fender Flea Signature Jazz Bass is an exact replica of the original '61 Jazz Bass that Flea used on many tours. The road-worn nitrocellulose lacquer finish matches Flea's original, and gives it a well-toured look that many people try to achieve. Fender have even carefully recreated the exact faded shade as Flea's original bass as it appears today. The attention to detail is superb, as the Pearloid dots on the rosewood fingerboard also have an authentic look.
The Flea Jazz Bass plays fast and easy thanks to the smooth maple neck, which allows you to effortlessly move up and down the fingerboard with ease. The bolt-on neck features a special neck plate that is engraved with Flea’s own artwork, which commemorates the inspiration behind this instrument. Fans will be amazed at how accurate this replica is!
Funky Flea sound
Not only does the Flea Signature Jazz Bass look great, but it is also equipped with the perfect components to achieve Flea's iconic tone. A pair of American-made Pure Vintage ’64 Jazz Bass single-coil pickups provide a classic, original-era Fender tone, as well as clear articulation. Achieve a clear low-end definition, up-front midrange punch and a singing high end. Controlled by simple volume and control knobs, you can easily control the amount bass tone you want.
Lightweight - perfect for the stage!
As we all know - Flea is also best known for his energetic bass playing. Weighing only 15 lbs - the lightweight alder body produces a resonant and balanced tone with a decent amount of sustain - and the perfect choice for dancing around on stage like the man himself. Fender have used alder as their tonewood of choice for electric guitars since the 1950s, as the balanced response and slight upper middle definition makes it perfect for rock and blues.
The legend that is Flea
Flea is primarily known as the Bassist and co-founding member of the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers. Flea’s funk and jazz-influenced basslines helped propel the RHCPs to the top of the rock and alternative charts, while redefining the role of bass in the modern era. Flea’s distinctive playing style brought a welcome breath of fresh air to the musical landscape of the past forty years, inspiring countless bassists to add a funky touch to their sound while exploring new techniques and harmonic possibilities. To celebrate his enduring influence on the Music industry and Bass players all over the world, Fender have recreated his prized Shell Pink ’61 Jazz Bass that he received from a fan.
Flea used the original bass to record the Red Hot Chili Peppers album “Stadium Arcadium” and even toured with it for a short while. The original is extremely valuable because it is one of very few original “Shell Pink” jazz bases ever produced by Fender- until now!
