Headphone power
Completely separate driver stages dedicated to each headphone output ensure pristine quality audio for tracking and mixing. This is achieved whilst catering for both low and high impedance headphones. TRS and mini-jack sockets are available on the Babyface Pro FS interface.
The interface features the same output op-amps as RME’s ADI-2 Pro, a high-end AD/DA Converter. Thanks to this, pristine audio is achieved, with the 3.5mm TRS phones output power rising to 90mW. Another advantage to the op amp output design is an improvement in total harmonic distortion by 10dB from the previous Babyface model. Output impedance of the 3.5mm TRS was also lowered from 2 Ohms to 0.1 Ohms.
Improved mic and line inputs
By specifically designing an XLR socket to fit the robust Babyface, RME successfully managed to save space for the interface’s circuitry. This includes two, digitally controlled, preamps both featuring individually switchable, 48V phantom power. These circuits feature a 76dB gain, ensuring accurate sound replication regardless of input gain on low level microphones. Adjustable in 1dB increments, these inputs include a relay-driven pad which provides overload protection.
The incredibly efficient design created by RME allows the Babyface to perform comfortably without an external power supply. Perfectly stable on USB 3 bus power, most USB 2 ports will also be able to power the Babyface Pro FS without degrading technical performance. This makes the interface extremely convenient for recording on location or on the road, even when using condenser microphones.
The Babyface interface supports 12 analog inputs and 12 outputs when connected to an external ADAT converter. This makes it perfect for various studio and live, multi-track applications. The optical TOSLINK I/O can be used either as an ADAT port with SMUX support or SPIDIF for sessions up to 192kHz. This ensures pristine audio can be recorded via the Babyface Pro FS interface. Two jack inputs can be utilised to plug line or high impedance instruments directly into the Babyface Pro. This makes recording on the go easy without external hardware needed. MIDI I/O via an included breakout cable completes the Babyface Pro FS.
Pro level performance with SteadyClock FS
The clock frequency is a crucial component in digital audio, creating a correlation between the audio bits and the time reference. One key feature to the Babyface Pro FS interface is the SteadyClock FS. This utilises the same circuity as RME’s ADI-2 Pro, providing the lowest jitter and higher jitter immunity. This contributes to you hearing your mix as accurately as possible in all clock modes. Across all RME products, digital format conversion is achieved without any degradation. Combined with SteadyClock FS, this results in recordings with more depth and clarity thanks to no audio loss in the recording process.
Mixing and routing
Routing is easily configurable throughout the Babyface Pro. The included real-time mixer, TotalMix FX, allows for fully independent routing and mixing to various physical outputs simultaneously. This means sending independent stereo sub mixes of both input and playback channels to all physical outputs.
RME’s TotalMix FX
A version of RME’s TotalMix FX, available for Windows, Mac and iOS systems, is included with the Babyface Pro FS. This allows the user to apply 3 band EQ, reverb and delays to all inputs and outputs. Designed to utilise the full capabilities of the Babyface interface, TotalMix FX is a great tool for users regularly recording in different locations.
RME’s TotalMix Remote
RME’s latest software, TotalMix Remote, further enhances the functionality of the Babyface Pro. This allows for remote control of the Babyface from multiple devices. This becomes greatly beneficial when using the Babyface in live environments, allowing you to walk around the space and adjust the sound. This is similarly beneficial when you are monitoring in an external control room to the studio space.
