From rich and crisp cleans to modern day metal tone and everything in between, the Marshall DSL40CRD has amazing versatility. Due to its two-channel system with separate volumes and reverbs you can get distinctly different tones that are independent from one another. You could set one channel where the sound is starting to break up and use a boost to take it into overdrive with the other channel set up clean, and then that same boost will just add a bit of ‘hair’ to your signal.
Or you could crank it and get all the '80s classic rock and metal tones you could ever want. There is also another clever feature that lets you half the power, meaning if you find yourself playing a smaller show you don’t need to dominate the stage volume with your amplifier, giving you a cleaner and better sound on stage and out front – loud isn’t always better.
The DSL40CRD Special has some great EQ options that let you shape your sound to suit your playing style. The bass, middle, and treble all effect the preamp tone giving you everything from fat rhythm tones to crisp and biting lead just by cranking the trebles. These are also very interactive with the midshift control. This reconfigures the mid frequencies in the pre-amp, which can help deliver those modern metal tones. This is a highly interactive control which will take some experimentation to find exactly what you want.
Separate from the pre-amp are two great power amp controls: resonance and presence. The former (when turned clockwise) brings about a bass bloom, adding weight and strength to the lower frequencies. The latter is like a treble control that alters the very high frequencies which can add extra bite to dark sounding guitars or even move your sound into jangly indie territory.
Choose between the classic gain and ultra-gain modes, both with their own separate volume and gain controls which grant you access to multiple gain structures. This is the classic Marshall EL34 powered valve tone that decades of players have fallen in love with, from Jimi Hendrix to Jeff Beck, to Slash and beyond.
The emulated speaker out is designed by the great minds at Softtube. This beautifully emulates a 1960A that is professionally mic’d up. This negates the headache of finding a decent space for setting up your amp and loads of leads and expensive microphones - an incredible feature for those of us that record a lot. Apart from being great for recording, it also is great to practice through headphones - just set your amp to standby and it will be completely silent as well!
