Type EW headjoint for focused response

Yamaha’s Type EW headjoint is designed to provide a free, open response with strong tonal focus and projection. The lip plate and headjoint body are sculpted from a single piece of fine African grenadilla, helping vibrations transfer more naturally throughout the instrument for a pure and balanced sound. The shape of the lip plate also provides a comfortable playing feel with secure embouchure control during longer rehearsals and performances. Combined with the silver tenon fitting, the headjoint maintains clarity and focus while also helping reduce overall instrument weight.

Inset toneholes for balanced intonation

The YFL-874 features precision-crafted inset grenadilla toneholes designed to match the larger dimensions found on Yamaha’s metal flutes. This wider tonehole design contributes to accurate intonation, improved tonal clarity, and a more even response across all registers. Because the toneholes are crafted directly from grenadilla, the flute retains the warm, natural resonance associated with wooden instruments while still supporting modern projection and stability. Yamaha also includes a silver tenon inside the footjoint connector, helping reduce weight, improve projection, and minimise the risk of cracking over time.

Ring keys give advanced players greater flexibility for tonal shading, alternate fingerings, and subtle pitch adjustments.
