The SubZero SZ-AI2 delivers optimum audio performance. The two combo XLR/jack inputs let you connect an instrument or microphone for direct 24bit 96kHz recording. Each channel includes a low-noise preamp, which you can switch between high and low impedance to optimise for your chosen sound source. There's also +48V phantom power, so you can connect high quality condenser microphones for detailed vocal recordings. Control your recordings using the gain level controls and useful clip indicators – helping you get the best quality recording possible.

Mixing and Mastering Made Simpler

Highly versatile. Listen to your mixes with headphones or studio monitors. There's a left and right XLR output featured on the back and 1/4" TRS headphone output on the front. You can switch the headphone output between stereo, mono, or off – for useful options when mixing. There's also a large volume control, plus an independent volume control for headphones.

Quick Setup

The SubZero SZ-AI2 USB audio interface is class compliant for MAC OS X. This means you can plug in and play, straight out of the box. For Windows systems, there's a simple driver (available online), which also features the SZ-AI2 control panel.

Why do I need three polar patterns?

Boasting three polar patterns, the SubZero Condenser Microphone is a real work-horse;

Cardioid is excellent for delivering a tight-focused sound, whilst providing excellent off-axis rejection of around -6dB of unwanted noise and ambience. This is a great polar pattern to rely on when recording live performances, either on-stage, or, in-the-studio.

Fig. 8 picks up sound from the front and the back of the capsule whilst rejecting all sound coming from the side. This pattern has been a go-to trick for many producers recording two background vocals. When paired with another fig.8 microphone and carefully positioned it can also work wonders on capturing vocals and guitar from a single performer simultaneously. However, beware. Utilising this positioning enhances close proximity effect which can lead to an unnatural amount of low-end being reproduced by the microphone. There's good reason why many radio broadcasters opt for this pattern!

When you want to capture natural recordings it doesn't get much better than omni. Omnidirectional means that sound is picked up by the capsule within a 360 degree radius. Selecting this pattern allows you to get up-close on sources without the risk of proximity effect being introduced. This is a favoured pattern for many Grammy award winning engineers and producers when recording multiple string and brass players. It can also make the "Levee Break" when heavily compressed and used for drum room microphones!

Get the sound right at source

The inclusion of pad and filter switches allow you to achieve the right sound at source. This ensures less strain is put on your computer as less plugins are needed!

The filter switch when activated provides a gentle filtering of frequencies below 100Hz. This is excellent for automatically reducing the risk of low-end rumble from the outside world, amplifiers and air-conditioning units, as well as minimising proximity effect which occur when a source is situated too close to the microphone.

Use the pad switch helps to decrease the capsule's sensitivity to loud sources such as drums, amplifiers and powerful vocalists. When engaged, the sensitivity of the microphone is reduced by 10dB. This minimises the risk of clipping and distortion from ruining those all important takes!
