The engine inside the heavy duty, full metal chassis of the Blofeld delivers the same fat and rich sound that so many Waldorf users worldwide love when they play their Pulse, Q, Q+, Micro Q, Microwave, Microwave II/XT, or even the flagship Wave. This unique synthesis system is based upon the revolutionary PPG Wave synthesisers of the early 80s. So when you listen to the Blofeld for the first time, you will instantly recognise those edgy, hard-hitting and bell-like timbres that have been an integral part of so many world hits from the PPG era on, and become increasingly popular once more.
The Blofeld provides 3 oscillators that offer authentic models of analog waveforms that provide the basis for sound shaping. These include pulse (with variable pulse-width), sawtooth, triangle and sine wave. Oscillators 1 and 2 also feature the 2 wavetables that were introduced by the Walford Q. Additionally, the Blofeld also includes all ROM wavetables from the Waldorf Wave, as well as Microwave II/XT Plus and the 'Upper Wavetable' from the PPG Wave. The Blofeld is the first synthesiser by Waldorf which provides a separate wavetable for each of these 2 oscillators. Any of the 3 oscillators can also be tweaked and frequency-modulated by any of the other oscillators, the noise generator, or the LFOs, providing you with endless synthesis options.
On-board are 2 multimode filters per voice for shaping and moulding your sounds. These can be routed in series or parallel. The filters also allow for stereo effects with their own pan parameter. The Blofeld features low-pass, high-pass, band-pass and notch filters with a 12dB/oct or 24dB/oct slope for each filter. The filters also offer self-oscillation with high resonance, as well as frequency modulation. The Blofeld also features the same comb filter types with positive and negative feedback that can be used to thicken up bass, lead and pad sounds. Or you can create percussive, string or flute sounds reminiscent of physical modeling.
Modulation, Distortion and Time-Based Effects
The Blofeld offers 3 LFOs with multiple waveforms, as well as sample and hold, and random. The LFOs can either be synched to MIDI clock, or they can be polyphonic or monophonic. The LFOs can also be used for FM synthesis due to their high reach rate. It offers linear and logarithmic FM. There are also a range of distortion/saturation effects. It offers low/medium/hard saturation, tube saturation, two types of electric pickups, a rectifier, digital overflow and binary distortion so there is plenty to play and experiment with. Additionally, the Blofeld provides 2 effect slots with various types. The first slot offers a range of modulation effects including flanger, chorus and a combined type called ‘Triple FX’ that gives you several effects at once. The second slot provides all the same types as the first with the addition of delay, clocked delay and reverb.
Ring Modulation, Noise Generator and Arppegiator
The ring modulator can be used to create more bell-like and metallic sounds. The noise generator produces white noise that can be low or high-pass filtered. Additionally, the 3 oscillators, ring modulator, and noise generator can be freely mixed into the 2 multimode filters, allowing for finer control over the harmonic content of each of the tone generators. Additionally, the Blofeld also features an intuitive and flexible arpeggiator that offers variable swing/shuffle, play order, different velocity modes and variable note length.
"The Blofeld represents an amazing comeback from Waldorf, who have plundered their vaults of accumulated wisdom to give us the best of their digital synths in an attractive and inexpensive package." Sound On Sound
