Start making music straight away
You don't need conventional keyboard technique or an understanding of staff notation to get started. Simply choose a chord using the clearly arranged buttons and move your finger across the strumplate to play its notes as a four-octave arpeggio. The OM-108 gives you 108 chords using combinations of one to three buttons, including major, minor, seventh, augmented, diminished, sus4, and add9 options. This makes it approachable for your first accompaniment while providing plenty of useful chord choices as your songwriting develops. Its tactile controls also let you make adjustments directly from the front panel without navigating a display.
Shape your own layered sounds
Ten strumplate tones give you a varied palette for accompaniment and melody. The omni1 and omni2 voices recreate OM-84 tones using analogue circuitry, while the selection also includes harp, celeste, acoustic piano, guitar, FM piano, organ, vibes, and banjo. Each can be combined with a pre-assigned sub voice, letting you blend two sounds using separate main voice and sub voice volume controls. That gives you an immediate way to adjust the balance of a layered sound while playing — useful when you want to add extra texture without interrupting your performance.
Explore melodies and new rhythms
Switch on keyboard mode and selected chord buttons become a 20-key melody keyboard, with octave shifting available when you need a wider range. The included melody keyboard overlay helps you find your way around the notes, while layering lets you bring the OM-108's two-voice approach into melodic playing. For beat-making, you get ten rhythm patterns covering rock, country, swing, disco, hip hop, funk, bossanova, and waltz styles. Drum sounds can also be assigned to the chord buttons and strumplate, giving you a hands-on way to create your own rhythmic performances.
Connect your ideas to a bigger setup
MIDI OUT lets the OM-108 work alongside external MIDI sound sources. Chord, strumplate, and drum performance information can all be transmitted, while strumplate data can use two separate MIDI channels for layered external sounds. For standalone playing, there's a built-in 10 cm speaker with 4.3 W amplifier output, plus line and headphone connections when you want to plug into another system or practise privately. Batteries can provide approximately 8 hours of operation, helping you take the OM-108 to rehearsals, writing sessions, and performances without relying on mains power.
