The Vox Limited Edition VRM-1 Real McCoy Wah Wah Pedal is the result of an extensive pursuit to recreate the ultimate vintage wah effect. Vox acquired a pristine vintage McCoy wah from 1967, often referred to as the "Holy Grail" due to its exceptional quality. Through exhaustive A/B testing, Vox meticulously analyzed its frequency response and compared it to other vintage units, unravelling the alchemy behind its unique sound.
Central to the vintage wah sound is the "Halo" inductor, and Vox has successfully replicated this essential component. By carefully studying the inductors of vintage units, Vox has incorporated the Halo inductor into the VRM-1. Renowned for its iconic nasal tone, the Real McCoy accentuates the midrange, providing a warm and melodic quality that enhances expressive lead guitar playing and highlights the articulation of each note.
The potentiometer, a variable resistor, plays a pivotal role in shaping the wah sweep. Vox painstakingly copied the potentiometer from the vintage unit and made meticulous adjustments to ensure a near-identical curve. The VRM-1 and V846 Vintage models employ distinct resistance values and curves, allowing for a versatile range of wah effects to suit different playing styles.
To achieve precise component matching, Vox has employed the BC108 transistor model for the VRM-1. This transistor not only matches the vintage counterpart in appearance but also in numbering. The interaction between the transistor's terminals and the bottom plate has been carefully engineered to ensure optimal performance. While similar transistors are available, Vox custom-designed a circuit for tone adjustment to replicate the unique tonal variance found in 60s components.
In the pursuit of authenticity, Vox uses larger 1/2W carbon film resistors in the new VRM-1 Wah Pedal. Vintage guitar amplifiers were known to use "carbon composite" resistors, but by the late '60s, "carbon film" resistors became the industry standard due to their cost-effectiveness and consistent quality. The VRM-1 stays true to the vintage sound by utilizing these larger carbon film resistors, moving away from chip resistors and 1/4W resistors commonly found in other pedals. This attention to detail results in a truly authentic sound that captures the essence of the vintage wah effect.
