The Gibson Custom 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue Light Aged is one of the most accurate recreations of a vintage guitar ever produced. Rather than drawing loosely from the past, this instrument is built from the ground up to replicate an original 1959 Les Paul Standard in extraordinary detail. Using laser scans of genuine vintage models, every curve, carve, and contour has been rendered with precision. The body construction features a two-piece figured maple top attached with hide glue to a single piece of lightweight mahogany — just as it was in 1959. Even the binding is made from Royalite, a period-correct plastic used during the golden era of Gibson. Every element of this guitar has been chosen and crafted to match the original, right down to the chemically recreated plastics and historically accurate dimensions.
One of the standout features of this reissue is the Murphy Lab Light Aged finish. Far from being a simple relic job, this is an artisan-applied process carried out by Gibson’s expert team within the Murphy Lab, designed to replicate the natural wear that occurs over decades of playing. Subtle lacquer checking, light dings, and aged nickel hardware give the guitar the look and feel of a well-loved vintage instrument. Unlike heavier relic finishes, the Light Aged treatment delivers a beautifully worn-in character while preserving the elegance and nuance of the Dirty Lemon sunburst. The result is a guitar that looks like it has lived through a rich musical history, yet still offers modern reliability and structural integrity.
At the heart of this guitar’s sonic character are its unpotted Custombucker Alnico 3 pickups, designed to emulate the sound of late-’50s PAF humbuckers with astonishing accuracy. These pickups are built to vintage spec, including the winding process, magnets, and materials. The lack of potting enhances dynamic response and harmonic richness, giving the guitar a lively, open tone that reacts beautifully to your touch. The wiring harness is equally true to the era, featuring CTS 500K audio taper potentiometers and paper-in-oil capacitors, ensuring smooth tone control and authentic high-frequency roll-off. From pushing a tube amp into saturated bliss to dialling in crisp clean tones, this guitar delivers exceptional tonal versatility with a timeless character.
Every component on the 1959 Les Paul Standard Reissue has been carefully selected to enhance both authenticity and performance. The 50s Rounded Medium C neck profile feels substantial without being cumbersome, delivering the comfortable grip players expect from a ’59 Les Paul. The fingerboard is crafted from Indian rosewood and fitted with authentic medium-jumbo frets, providing a classic playing feel that supports expressive bends and smooth vibrato. Other appointments like the Kluson tuners, ABR-1 bridge, and lightweight aluminium stop bar tailpiece all contribute to the guitar’s period-correct aesthetic and dependable functionality. Each detail, from the stepped truss rod cover to the laminated cellulose acetate pickguard, has been faithfully recreated.
