Key Features
The supergroup is an out and out icon. Now, the Laney Black Country Customs LA100SM Super Mod 100w Valve Head adds a master volume which allows you to get those cranked tones at lower volumes! This is a monster of an amp and not one for the faint-hearted.
But if you tame it, a world of incredible vintage tones are available to you. From thick treble to an absolute behemoth sounding, wall of crushing noise. With four inputs that can be jumpered, you can take full advantage of the voices this amp can deliver. An amp that has one channel and a handful of knobs isn’t exactly what you may refer to as versatile, but it really is, it’s just about understanding how to use it. For example, it’s a monster of a pedal platform.

The Laney supergroup was adopted by Tony Iommi after the release of ‘Paranoid’ by Black Sabbath and had continued use right up to the back end of the ‘80s. This defined a whole new genre of music – heavy metal, low tuned, sludgy, and LOUD!
Although this isn’t just about gain and colossal volume. The LA100SM has a range of beautiful clean tones available with enough headroom to handle anything you throw at it. This is a harmonically complex and rich amplifier that offers lush trebles, a phat mid-range and enough bass (if you need it) to level a sky scrapper. Honestly, it doesn’t matter what you plug into it – everything sounds great, even that weird guitar you found in the attic.
This is an immersive playing experience that is now rarely available, but this reissue delivers that pure vintage playing experience once again. Getting the tone from this amp was a simple case of dragging you hand across all the setting until they all read 10 and you were done.
Of course, that would be insane for any practical use nowadays so modding the Supergroup with a master volume control made this beast way more tameable with no negative impact on tone. Bring this to a gig and destroy or take it into a studio and lay down the sound that paved the way for a whole new era.
This amp is made in a purely old school way, it is unashamed. For what it lacks in features it more than makes up for in tone. But for those interested, here is a list of features: bass, treble, middle, presence, gain, and volume – done.
…We all tend to get caught up with too many effects boxes switches, and knobs. But having a focused amp that allows you to purse an idea without any distraction? That’s special. It’s a tone you can rely on and one that will only become more familiar with you the more you play it – this is about making music, not aimless tinkering.
The EL34 makes up the power section of the LA100SM. A tube type that is a staple in top end British guitar amp sand the Laney used a quad of them here in A/B configuration, delivering 100w of raw power! They used this in a way that developed a sound unlike anything else. A sound unique amongst a sea of amps that sound like poor copies of each other and developed a tone that changed how music sounds. Black Sabbath, they were said to have a song for each of the first sub-genres of metal, a genre that’s still expanding – arguably, this is the tone that started it all.
