The Boss EX-4 Effects Expander is a compact effects unit designed to expand the sonic capabilities of pedalboard setups without taking up valuable space. Its library contains 120 high-quality BOSS effects spanning major categories including overdrive, distortion, modulation, delay and reverb, alongside bass-tuned effects and distinctive BOSS favourites. Up to four effects can run simultaneously, including multiple instances of the same effect, giving guitarists, bassists and other musicians extensive creative flexibility.

Gear Suite helps you find ready-to-play effects quickly and save favourite parameter setups, while the 2.4-inch colour display, intuitive knobs and dedicated FX buttons keep operation straightforward. Manual and Memory modes provide stompbox-style or preset-based control, supported by 128 preset memories for guitar and bass and 128 user memories. Flexible mono/stereo connectivity, an effect loop, MIDI I/O and configurable dual footswitches make the EX-4 equally capable of integrating external pedals and providing sophisticated real-time control.

Huge effects library in a compact unit

With 120 high-quality BOSS effects available, the EX-4 adds an extensive range of sounds to a pedalboard while maintaining a compact footprint. The available effects include overdrive, distortion, modulation, delay and reverb, complemented by bass-tuned effects and distinctive BOSS favourites such as Slow Gear and Slicer. Up to four effects can operate simultaneously, including multiple instances of the same effect, giving guitarists, bassists and other musicians broad scope to cover different songs, styles and sounds from one space-saving effects unit.

Fast and intuitive sound creation

Gear Suite makes sound creation quick and straightforward, providing ready-to-play effects while letting you save favourite parameter setups for each effect type. A vivid 2.4-inch colour display clearly presents the full signal chain, individual effect blocks, editing options and menus. Dedicated FX buttons switch effect blocks on or off with a single press, while a long press accesses editing parameters. Their colours match the corresponding effects shown on the display, making individual blocks easy to identify as you build and adjust sounds.

Flexible effect chains and memories

The EX-4 supports standard serial effect chains with freely reorderable effects, alongside advanced series, parallel and wet/dry configurations for more elaborate setups. Its effect loop can incorporate one or more external pedals anywhere within the EX-4 effect chain, expanding your routing possibilities further. Manual and Memory modes support stompbox-style or preset-based operation, while 128 preset memories for guitar and bass are joined by 128 user memories for custom sounds. You can even set it up to provide seamless memory changes with delay and reverb carryover.

Comprehensive performance control

Dual multi-function footswitches provide flexible control and feature colour LEDs that clearly indicate their current functions while performing. Assignments can include effect block switching, memory up and down, master bypass, tap tempo and more, with configuration available system-wide or per memory. Four audio jacks support mono or stereo operation and flexible effect-loop routing, while connections for two footswitches or an expression pedal provide additional real-time control. TRS MIDI input and output enable deeper integration with MIDI pedals, switching systems and external clocking devices.
