Key Features
The Behringer 76 Classic FET-style Compressor is a rackmount dynamics processor for producers, recording engineers, and live sound professionals who want precise compression with vintage character. Inspired by the classic 1176LN, it uses a discrete FET circuit to deliver fast attack times, helping you control sharp transients without losing the energy of your performance. Four selectable compression ratios give you plenty of control over your sound.
Custom MIDAS input and output transformers contribute a warm, full-bodied tone with detailed highs and controlled lows. Dedicated attack, release, input, and output controls make adjustments straightforward, while the illuminated VU meter helps you monitor levels. Housed in a sturdy 2U steel chassis, the 76 fits comfortably into studio racks and live sound setups.

The Behringer 76 uses field-effect transistor (FET) compression to respond quickly to changes in signal level. Based on the classic 1176LN's D and E revisions, its fully discrete signal path and Class-A output amplifier help retain the character of the original design. With adjustable attack times between 25 and 760 microseconds, you can catch sudden peaks in drums, vocals, and other dynamic sources before they become overpowering. Release times between 80 and 670 milliseconds give you further control over how the compression responds. This makes it easier to tighten up performances while preserving performers’ natural movement and impact.
Different recordings need different amounts of compression. That's why the 76 provides four selectable ratios, giving you control over how firmly it responds to louder signals. The 4:1 setting works well for gentle dynamic levelling, while 8:1 offers more noticeable control. Move up to 12:1 or 20:1 when you need stronger limiting. Want something with more attitude? Press all four ratio buttons together to activate All Buttons mode. This introduces additional harmonic distortion and sustain, helping drums sound more aggressive, bass lines feel fuller, and vocals maintain their presence in busy mixes.
Compression doesn't just affect volume; it can also influence the character of your sound. The 76 features specially designed MIDAS transformers on both its input and output stages, contributing warmth and body while maintaining detail across the frequency range. Expect a defined low end and clear high frequencies, making it useful when processing individual instruments or complete mixes. Its transformer-balanced connections also support integration with other studio equipment. Combined with the discrete FET circuitry, these components give you a way to manage dynamics while introducing some of the tonal qualities associated with classic analogue recording equipment.
Getting your compression settings right is easier when everything is within reach. The 76 features separate controls for input, output, attack, and release, allowing you to adjust the response without navigating menus. An illuminated, vintage-style VU meter displays gain reduction or output levels, so you can check how the compressor is behaving as you work. XLR and quarter-inch TRS connections offer flexibility when connecting your equipment, while the sturdy 2U steel enclosure fits into standard studio and touring racks. Plus, the universal auto-ranging power supply adapts to different mains voltages without manual switching, making it practical for travelling between venues and studios.
Any electrical items in your order may have been designed to work with a 240V circuit, using a United Kingdom G type plug connection or a 220V circuit, using an EU plug connection. An adapter or transformer may be required for these items to work properly and safely in your country. Some items work with a range of voltages, or have a switchable voltage control built in.
