Features in-depth

Whilst it can be very beneficial to read a list of features to get a quick overview of what that monitor has to offer, it doesn’t tell the full story of how this can benefit you and your setup. Let’s take a closer look at each PreSonus Eris studio monitor range and see how this can work for you.

Eris

The PreSonus Eris model has been designed to offer maximum performance at an affordable price. Engineered by a name you can trust, PreSonus have an extensive history within the world of studio monitors and have channelled this experience into creating the Eris.

The main difference between the Eris and XT monitors are the designs of the tweeter and the tweeter enclosure. The Eris range features a Soft Dome design with a Silk tweeter. The rounded shape of this design disperses sound in a wide pattern to create a sweet-spot range.

The sweet spot is the range of distance between two monitors and the listening position. With the Soft Dome design, the sweet-spot range is dependent upon the size of the tweeter whereby the bigger the tweeter, the bigger the sweet spot.

Eris-E5-Pair

Although this may mean that for certain setups, you may need to consider the size of the monitor more carefully, the Soft Dome design in the Eris studio monitor produces a smooth and silky top-end that’s ideal for mixing and mastering.

A second difference comes in the design of the baffle. The Eris studio monitor features a small and compact baffle, lowering the size of the internal reflection points.

Typically, this would introduce an increase in energy in the low-end of your signal due to the waves bouncing internally in the baffle. However, the Eris monitors feature an elegantly designed internal bracing that works in tandem with the front-mounted port to reduce resonances and vibrations for a punchy and powerful low end that can typically reach down to 58Hz!

In order for the Eris to be truly flexible and stand out from the crowd, PreSonus have included three acoustic property controls to tailor the sound of your monitor to your room. The Acoustic Tuning control gives you +/- 6dB of gain over the mid-range (centered around 1kHz) and high-end (centered around 10kHz), allowing you to compensate for any room sound inaccuracies that can alter the sound of your speakers.

Next, a three-position Acoustic Space switch lets you alter the response of your monitors depending on how close your speakers are to a parallel wall. This is ideal for smaller setups that aren’t able to be spaced away from the wall to ensure that you don’t get a build-up of low-end that can make your Eris monitors sound muddy.

Lastly, a three-position low-frequency filter that can either be bypassed or set to 80 or 100Hz is ideal for pairing with a subwoofer for a cleaner and more linear frequency response.

This flexibility in control of the acoustic properties of your PreSonus Eris Monitors means that no matter what your setup, you will be able to accurately hear your tracks, allowing you to make more informed mixing and mastering decisions to produce the best song possible.

Eris XT

The PreSonus XT studio monitor is a continuation of the original Eris range, with a few key components re-designed for optimum audio quality.

Firstly, the size of the baffle has been redesigned and made larger. This means that inside the baffle, there is a bigger area for the low frequencies waves to move around.

When paired with the front-mounted port, this increased dispersion helps the XT monitors to produce lower low-frequencies than the Eris models, down to 48Hz. That’s roughly 10Hz below the size equivalent from the Eris range, without the use of an external subwoofer.

This extra 10Hz of frequency content ensures that if you’re mixing bass-heavy music – such as EDM or dance music – you can more accurately mix the important low-end information in your synthesizers and drums.

Eris-E5-XT-Tweeter

The most notable difference between the XT and Eris range of studio monitors is the tweeter design. With XT, PreSonus worked in collaboration with Hugh Sarvis of WorxAudio to design from the ground up a new EBM (Elliptical Boundary Modeled) waveguide for the tweeter.

This custom-designed waveguide provides high-frequency dispersion up to 100-degrees horizontally and 60-degrees vertically. from the tweeter.

This increase in dispersion massively increases the sweet spot for your listening position, meaning that no matter where you sit in your room depending on your setup, even if on or off-axis, you won’t be losing out on high-frequency information and can therefore mix much more accurately than ever before.

As high-frequency waves are low in energy and therefore very direct, if you are not in the ideal listening position for your studio monitors, you can often incorrectly hear the amount of top-end information in your sound. Sit too far away and you will lose some high-end, sit slightly closer to one monitor and the other will sound duller in comparison.

The inclusion of the EBM waveguide delivers a consistent listening position over a much larger spread in your studio. Now, you can enjoy a smoother and more natural top-end that allows you to mix intricate details such as vocals or brass instruments more accurately.

Identical to the Eris monitors, XT also features the same acoustic property shaping tools in the form of the Acoustic Tuning, Acoustic Space and Low-frequency filter, ensuring continuity between the series

Eris BT

Bringing something new to the table, the PreSonus BT studio monitors offer the most versatility and flexibility, catering to a wide range of creatives and musicians.

The thing that sets the Eris BTs apart from others in the series is the integrated Bluetooth connectivity. PreSonus have included the latest Bluetooth 5.0 technology to achieve crystal-clear sound when using the speakers. This allows you to stream music from Bluetooth-enabled devices such as smartphones, tablet devices and computers.

Whether you’re a musician, DJ or even a streaming content creator, the wireless Bluetooth connectivity lets you connect a myriad of devices quickly and easily whilst still enjoying the signature sound of PreSonus.

One of the most unique and convenient features of the speaker is the integrated headphone amplifier. This high-quality, integrated headphone amp boasts a front-panel stereo 1/8-inch jack, allowing you to monitor your audio completely isolated from the outside world making it ideal for late-night mixing sessions.

Unique to the Eris BT is the rear-mounted bass port. Rear-mounted bass ports allow for two things in the PreSonus BT studio monitors, A) to keep the size of the speaker baffle to a minimum for ultimate portability, and B) to reduce any potential audible resonances from low-frequency audio.

While the size of the speaker baffle has been reduced, PreSonus have employed similar resonance-suppressing internal bracing as both the Eris and XT range to completely minimize the risk of resonances.

Compact in size, the PreSonus Eris BT studio monitors also feature front-panel volume control for added convenience, allowing you to easily adjust your volume on the fly.

The PreSonus Eris BT also boasts a range of connectivity including 1/4-inch TRS, unbalanced 1/8-inch, stereo and RCA inputs. The front panel also features a 1/8-inch stereo Aux input for connecting your mobile audio devices such as a smartphone or MP3 player.
