The Epiphone Extura – One of the Best Value Metal Guitars?

14/12/2022

Bold. Alluring. And packed to the brim with high-spec hardware. The Epiphone Extura is surely one of the best value metal guitars out there.

It promises fast-paced riffs, accurate playability, and deliciously destructive tones through its array of professional standard components. These include super clear Fishman Fluence pickups and a sleek, premium ebony fretboard – features that you’d normally find on guitars well above the Extura’s price point!

So, with such an impressive spec sheet and some killer looks, is the sinister Extura for you? Read on to find out more…

Aesthetics with attitude

It’s utterly distinctive. The Extura forms part of Epiphone’s Prophecy series, which takes classic Gibson/Epiphone shapes and supercharges them with metal menace.

The exciting Extura is joined by the all-conquering Les Paul, showstopping Flying V, and hallowed SG, which are all a darker spin on the designs we know and love.

In the Extura’s case, Epiphone have combined the iconic Gibson Explorer with the unreleased prototype Gibson Futura, creating a uniquely eye-catching shape. Angular and jagged, it’ll fit in on any stage, and with any group, no matter how edgy your music!

A stunning AAA flamed maple top

It’s not just the angles that make the Extura alluring, it also sports a AAA flame maple veneer to really captivate your audience. And while it’s only a veneer, the AAA quality is a visual treat that’s usually found on far more expensive instruments.

As for the finishes? Your choice of Purple Tiger, Yellow Tiger, and sleek, shiny Black provide plenty of captivating colours.

Unleash the fiery screams of Hell

Epiphone Extura body and pickupsUnrelenting roars. That’s what the Extura promises, and with a set of bespoke Fishman Fluence pickups, it’ll surely deliver. Usually found on high-spec metal guitars, these pickups have been custom-voiced for the Extura to deliver a truckload of tones.

Equipped with three distinct voicings that give you plenty of sonic options, you’re never short of fresh takes when writing or improvising music.

First up is a vintage “Patent Applied For” warm, crunchy style – a sound that’s sought after by die-hard gearheads for its creamy and vintage humbucker tones. Dial it back and achieve some classic rock and blues sounds when you fancy a break from all the head-banging!

Next is the hot modern humbucker voicing, which Fishman do so well. Super clear and tight thanks to the active electronics, this voicing will make solos rip with razor-edged sonics and chords drip with saturation when you crank the gain.

And finally, for an extended dynamic range, you can access a sparkling single coil sound, great for when you need to thin out your tone or dial back the sound completely for a lower output style.

With three distinct voicings packed into one set of pickups, the Extura can provide so many musical options before you even begin to look at amps and effects units.

Riffs with righteousness

OK, so I needed that to alliterate.

It might not be righteousness you’re riffing with, but it will certainly be with untamed speed. And that’s because the Extura serves up a special asymmetrical SlimTaper neck shape with a super smooth ebony fretboard.

This odd neck shape gives your thumb a thicker resting point, and it thins out towards the bottom, allowing more room for your fretting fingers.

Consequently, you’ll find it much easier to pull off technical licks and fast-tapping solos.

And at risk of sounding like a broken record, again, these features are usually found on much pricier instruments.

What are you waiting for?

It’s for you. Whether you’re into metal or not, the Extura offers a gateway to superior sounds at a fraction of the cost of similar spec’d instruments.

Metalheads will appreciate the ferocious tones and smooth playability, whereas the metal-curious get a guitar with multiple voicings and an addictive feel. What’s not to love? Especially when you consider that this tier of components is rarely found in a guitar below £800!
