The Best Drumsticks 2024 – Options for All Ability Levels and Budgets

27/11/2024

Every drummer will know the importance of a good pair of drumsticks – they make all the difference to your playing. Whether you’re just starting out or already know your way around the kit, a fresh pair of sticks is always a welcome accessory that can give your sound a fantastic new lease of life.

If you’re on the hunt for some, our drum team here at Gear4music is here to help. We’ve compiled the best drumsticks on the market, with options to suit different playing styles, experience levels, and budgets. We’ll discuss the materials, shapes, and sizes available to help you find the pair that best fits your needs.

As well as recommendations from the team, the list also includes sticks that I have used and loved for years. Collectively, we’ve tried many drumsticks, and these are what we all deem to be the best from experience!

Why we’ve chosen these drumsticks

“Best” is subjective, which is why we’ve tried to accommodate as many genres, drumming styles, and preferences as possible. Our list includes a host of materials, from hickory to maple to synthetic, and a variety of weights to provide different playing feels.

Some options are unusual, like the Lars Ulrich aluminium sticks, but come with great benefits that you don’t see in average sticks, while others are tried and tested favourites across the board, like the Vic Firth 5As. And if you have a favourite drummer, there are more signature models on our list, too.

Each pair offers good value for money (especially if you opt for a pack rather than one set of sticks), they’re durable and of great build quality, they’re comfortable to use, and they give you fantastic control over your kit. This is the criteria we stuck to for the full list, giving you the best options on the market right now.

The best drumsticks

1. Promark Classic Forward 5A FireGrain Hickory, Wood Tip – The most durable sticks

Promark Classic Forward 5A FireGrain Hickory, Wood TipKey features

  • Hickory wood with FireGrain heat-treated finish
  • 5A diameter and forward-balanced
  • Wood tip

Pros

  • Exceptionally durable due to FireGrain hardening
  • Balanced weight for powerful strokes
  • Ideal for versatile, high-energy styles

Cons

  • May feel too firm for lighter playing styles

Promark’s Classic Forward 5A FireGrain drumsticks are an absolute favourite of mine! Made from strong hickory, these sticks are perfect for drummers who want durability without losing that great feel. They measure 16 inches long with a comfortable 5A thickness.

The forward-balanced design gives them a little extra weight at the tip, making it easy to get a solid, powerful strike. I first came across these at the UK Drum Show back in 2017, and I’ve been using them ever since.

The manufacturing process of these sticks is detailed and ensures a premium-quality build right from the start. First, the dowel pre-qualifying stage determines which is the most durable and has the best longevity.

From there, the sticks go through the special FireGrain process, which involves passing the sticks through an eight-burner flame tunnel. This hardens the wood and makes them last longer. It’s a technique similar to the process used for baseball bats.

Thanks to flame tempering, the sticks are incredibly durable, meaning you won’t have to replace your sticks as often, which is a huge plus. They also come in signature ranges. My personal favourites are the Larnell Lewis FireGrain Hickory Drumstick with a wood tip. They blend resilience with balance, making them perfect for demanding drumming sessions.

2. 5A Hickory Drumsticks by Gear4music – The best budget-friendly drumsticks

Plus, the natural wood tip gives you a lovely warm tone that works well for practice sessions and performances. They’re reliable, affordable, and a very solid, well-made set!

3. Promark Rebound 5B ActiveGrip Hickory DrumsticksThe best for drummers who need grip support

Promark Rebound 5B ActiveGrip Hickory Drumsticks, Wood TipKey features

  • Rebound balance

Pros

  • ActiveGrip coating enhances grip as your hands warm up
  • Thick 5B size is ideal for powerful playing

  • ActiveGrip may feel too sticky for lighter playing

With a thicker 5B diameter, they’re just right for those who like to hit hard, providing the strength and weight needed for rock and heavier genres.

What makes these sticks so innovative is ActiveGrip. This is Promark’s special grip technology that gets stickier when your hands start to sweat – meaning you don’t lose grip on the sticks. There’s only a thin layer applied, just like a traditional lacquer, so it doesn’t add any extra bulk or weight to the stick.

With a great rebound balance, these sticks respond quickly, making them ideal for lively drumming sessions.

Cons

  • Higher initial investment compared to wooden sticks

The Ahead Lars Ulrich Aluminium Drumsticks are some of the most innovative in design.

They’re aluminium, which lasts approximately six times longer than wood, and have nylon tips, making them perfect for powerful playing. But one of its most unique features is the replaceable sleeves which extend the life of the sticks dramatically. Rather than invest in a new pair of sticks further down the line, you can just replace the sleeve.

Plus, the vibration reduction system keeps your hands comfortable even during those long jam sessions.

While they might cost a bit more upfront, these sticks offer an awesome alternative to traditional wooden ones. They may not be the ideal fit for every drummer or budget, but if you’re a heavy hitter looking for durability, these sticks could be the right choice.

A newer player in the world of synthetic drumsticks, Techra offer durability and playability, making these sticks perfect for anyone looking to cut down on replacements while still enjoying that familiar feel. We think they’re the perfect choice for drummers looking for a durable stick that has that great hickory feel.

With their unique design – featuring no defined tip – they offer an alternative for those looking to play with a lighter approach. Plus, because they’re longer and lighter than traditional sticks, you’ll enjoy fantastic close-in control.

How does the drumstick material affect performance?

Drumstick materials significantly impact the durability, feel, and sound characteristics of the stick. The main types used include:

  • Hickory: Known as a balanced all-rounder, hickory provides good density and shock absorption, making it durable and comfortable for most drumming styles
  • Oak: Oak sticks are denser and more solid than hickory, providing excellent durability and a more substantial feel. Ideal for hard-hitting drummers
  • Maple: A softer, lighter wood, maple provides a delicate touch and is suited to genres needing finesse, though it is less durable than denser woods
  • Carbon fibre: Known for its high durability, carbon sticks offer a different, non-traditional feel. While tough, they may lack the acoustic warmth of wood
  • Aluminium: Brands like Ahead use aluminium for the core of the drumstick, providing extreme durability and shock reduction, making it a good choice for players who need robust, resilient sticks

Tip material

It’s not just the stick material that affects the drum sound and playing experience; the tip material also has a huge role to play:

  •  Nylon tips: Commonly used for enhanced durability and rebound, nylon tips provide sharp attack, especially on cymbals
  • Wood tips: Wood tips offer natural sound and better control, making them ideal for players wanting a warmer, acoustic tone

Thickness, length, and taper

Thicker sticks are great if you want something sturdy and durable, whereas thinner sticks are lighter and work well for fast, delicate playing. If you have a large kit or you’re looking for some extra reach, it goes without saying that you should opt for a longer stick. Once you have the length sorted, start thinking about the taper.

A longer taper offers a lighter touch and quicker rebound, which is fantastic for speedy beats. Meanwhile, a shorter taper, which provides a bit more weight towards the tip, gives you more punch for those strong strikes.

Consider the drumsticks’ tip shapes

The shape of your drumstick tips can change the overall sound, especially when playing ride cymbals, so it’s a very important consideration. Here are the most common tip shapes you’ll come across:

  • Ball tips: These provide a bright and precise sound, perfect for making your cymbals stand out
  • Acorn tips: These bring a warm, full sound that has a nice balance, making them great for a variety of playing styles on drums and cymbals
  • Oval tips: Oval-shaped tips create a rounded, rich tone with great volume and projection – fantastic if you’re after a deeper sound
  • Barrel tips: Known for their strong, focused tone with a bit of punch, barrel tips are a go-to choice for loud, powerful drumming

How to choose the best drumsticks for you

The right drumsticks can drastically enhance your playing experience, but the best ones for you all come down to the style, comfort, and kind of sound you want to create. If you want a versatile option that works well across different genres, medium-weight sticks with a balanced taper are a great choice. They offer good control and are perfect for beginners and casual drumming.

If you love to play powerfully and often hit hard, durable materials like hickory with a reinforced finish are what you need. These sticks are built to handle intensity without breaking. If your style is lighter or involves intricate techniques, go for sticks that are thinner and have a shorter taper. This will help you achieve quicker, lighter strokes that really shine in articulation.

FAQs

Are thicker drumsticks better?

Thicker drumsticks are generally better for power and durability. They provide increased control, especially for louder playing styles, as they absorb shock well and are harder to break. However, thicker sticks can be tiring to use for a long time – an important consideration!

How do I choose the right drumstick?

Choosing the right drumstick depends on your style, comfort, and sound preference. Consider factors like weight, thickness, and wood type: lighter sticks suit softer styles, while heavier sticks work for louder music. Test different sizes, such as 5A or 7A, to find your best match.

Which is lighter, 5A or 7A drumsticks?

7A drumsticks are lighter than 5A drumsticks. The 7A size is typically thinner and suited to jazz or light playing, while 5A sticks offer a balanced weight for a wide range of styles. If you need a pair of drumsticks that are easy to handle during fast fills and rudiments, 7A is often preferred.
