The Empirical Labs DocDerr Multi-Purpose Tone Module is a highly versatile 500 series module, intended for sound design applications. The DocDerr provides tone enhancement via the six different sections, providing versatile analog processing for a range of sources. At the heart of the module is an ultra-low-noise preamp, designed for use with line/instrument level signals. It is accompanied by four section of EQ, including a dual-position high-pass filter and three parametric bands for maximum versatility. One of the most unique features is the integrated internal jumper that can make the DocDerr function as an instrument preamp with 16dB of gain. It is ideal for use with a range of instruments including acoustic guitar, bass and synths.
Following the EQ is a unique dynamics section. This section boasts Empirical Lab’s renowned compression technology, as well as musical tape emulation circuit for taming higher frequencies and transient spikes. The versatile knee compression is similar to that of the Distressor unit, providing single knob compression.
One of the most innovative aspects of the design is the ‘Mix’ knob. This custom control allows you to blend uncompressed EQ signals with the compressed, saturated signal. This allows you to achieve parallel compression. A technique used by recording and mixing engineers to unlock a more untamed and aggressive sound. This can be highly useful when it comes to mixing and mastering, adding a new tonality and sound to your mix at the turn of a knob.
The versatile design is reminiscent of vintage modules with its ergonomic layout and precision pots. The DocDerr can be used for a variety of applications including fine-tuning tracks during mixing, changing the tone of a sound or even subtle EQing for synths and keyboards. The parametric EQ features its own set of tune frequency presets for added convenience. The unit can also be linked together with other for compressing stereo sources. Additionally, the unit comes complete with a guitar adapter cable.
