Doepfer A-156 Dual Quantizer

Details
The Doepfer A-156 Dual Quantizer module features two quantizers in a single module. Each quantizer is equipped with a CV in, CV out, Trigger input, and a Trigger output. The A-156 converts a continuous CV in the range of 0 to +10V into a stepped voltage, normally in 1/12V steps to obtain semitone steps. Quantizer 2 on the A-156 features some more sophisticated quantizing modes such as minor scale, major scale, major chord, and minor chord, alongside fundamental + fifth and addition of seventh or sixth when chords are selected. The voltages that apply to the selection rule will appear at the quantizer's CV output. The second quantizer is equipped with 3 switches for mode selection, whilst quantizer 1 works in regular semitone mode. A jumper on the PCB can be adjusted to allow quantizer 1 to use the same scale as quantizer 2. The A-156 is a versatile and powerful unit for CV quantizing.

Controls

  • Quantizer 2 First Switch: Three-position switch that determines the scale type for quantizer 2.
    • All: Chromatic Scale, with a voltage step of 1/12V. This mode means switches 2 and 3 have no function
    • Major: Major chords or major scales are generated, depending upon the position of switch 2
    • Minor: Minor chords or minor scales are generated, depending upon the position of switch 2
  • Quantizer 2 Second Switch: Three-position switch that determines the output mode for quantizer 2.
    • Scale: All voltages corresponding to the scale selected with switch 1 are passed to the CV output
    • Chord: Only voltages corresponding to the chord type selected with switch 1 are passed to the CV output
    • Quint: Only voltages corresponding to the fundamental or the fifth are passed to the CV output
  • Quantizer 2 Third Switch: Three-position switch that enables the addition of a sixth or minor seventh if switch 2 is in the Chord or Quint position. In the "-" position, neither are added. If switch 2 is in the Scale position, switch 3 has no function

Inputs & Outputs

  • Quantizer 1 CV Input: This is the CV input for quantizer 1. The CV that you wish to quantize is patched into this socket
  • Quantizer 1 CV Output: This is the CV output for quantizer 1
  • Quantizer 1 Trigger Input: If a trigger signal is applied to this trigger input, then the quantization process of quantizer 1 will take place during low/high transition of the trigger signal. If this is not desired, then you can simply leave the socket un-connected. Quantization then takes place at the internal rate of about 500Hz. The external trigger signals are scanned with a rate of around 1kHz. Therefore the external trigger frequency must be less than 500Hz to avoid aliasing effects. In practice this will be no restriction, as normal quantization rates are much lower, normally only a few Hz
  • Quantizer 1 Trigger Output: Outputs a trigger pulse with a duration of around 10ms whenever quantization takes place. For example, this output can be used to trigger an envelope generator with each new quantization step
  • Quantizer 2 CV Input: This is the CV input for quantizer 2. The CV that you wish to quantize is patched into this socket
  • Quantizer 2 CV Output: This is the CV output for quantizer 2
