Key Features
The AJH Minimod Sonic XV, Black is a 4-pole diode ladder filter that features the same circuitry and sound of the Musonics Sonic V synthesizer. The Sonix XV is a versatile filter module that features two waveshapers, something not usually added to a normal filter. The 2 waveshapers can be mixed together with the dry input signal to add additional harmonics to a sound. As well as the normal 24dB low pass output, there is a 6dB low pass output, and band pass output with full voltage control of the resonance, allowing you to shape your sound. The diode ladder filter core offers a different character to transistor ladder filters. The added features make the Sonic XV one of the most versatile eurorack modular filters around. Additionally, the Sonic XV features 4 independent CV inputs, allowing for complex filtering and waveshaping.

The AJH Minimod Sonic XV is based on the diode ladder filter from the Musonics Sonic V synthesizer that dates back to the early 1970’s. The diode ladder filter has a different character to the transistor ladder filter, which gives the Minimod Sonic XV its sound. When the feedback is pushed to high level, the filter will self-oscillate and produce a sinewave output when no audio signal is patched in.
The Sonic XV includes a waveshaper that allows you to add harmonics and distortion to both the pre-filtered signal, and the resonance loop return signal. It is most effective when used on certain waveforms with slower rise and fall times like triangle or sine waves. The input waveshaper includes a 3 positon bias control switch that allows for variation to the waveshaping, resulting in different effects and timbres. Conveniently, you can mix in the amount of waveshaping with the dry input signal to shape the sound. The wavefolder can be used to add more harmonic content to a sound, resulting in more brightness for low frequency content. This is because the wavefolder adds harmonic content to the input signal before it is processed by the filter core.
The other waveshaper featured on the Sonic XV is the resonance waveshaper. This is an overdrive waveshaper which is only effective when filter resonance is added. The waveshaper can be mixed with the dry resonance loop signal between 0 and 100 percent. The two waveshapers make this a versatile filter module, allowing you to not only filter sounds, but also add small amounts of the 2 waveshapers to add warmth and fatness to a signal. Using larger amounts can result in very aggressive sounds. The filter module can actually add harmonics to waveforms rather than just filtering them.
The layout and design of the Sonic XV makes it ideal for live performance. AJH have carefully designed it so your cables stay out of the way when adjusting knobs. All the patch points are positioned at the bottom of the module, whilst all the knobs are at the top, leaving you free to make adjustments without getting caught on any cables. Coated in a sleek, black finish, the Minimod Sonic XV offers a simplified interface and professional appearance.
