To provide such a wide range of modulation potential, the main algorithmic element of the Polygogo relies on a digital processor, guaranteeing absolute frequency stability for internal modulations. The stereo wave-overflow output is classic analog circuitry to retain unprecedented crispness and an open sound.
Designed in collaboration with instrument designer Tatsuya Takahashi, the Polygogo utilises a ‘knob-per-function’ design. This means each feature is always accessible to the user without scrolling through menus. This is perfect for quick alterations in live scenarios.
Polygonal synthesis is based on complex two-dimensional amplitude shaping of sine waves. This is combined with internal modulation sources and a new type of wave folder. The result produces five separate parameters within the Polygogo.
Order - set the overtones
The Order parameter defines the number of corners on the polygon, which can range from a line (order 2) to an almost perfect circle (order 28) with all fractional settings in between. The number of corners defined by the user effects the ratio of overtones with respect to the fundamental frequency. A low corner count keeps the harmonics near the fundamental frequency, a high order shifts them up.
Teeth - bite through the mix
The Teeth parameter was stumbled across in a happy accident when developing polygonal synthesis. It tilts the sides of the polygon out of the normal orientation and can be used to control the loudness of the overtones. By creating discontinuities within the waveform, the Teeth parameter acts as balance between the fundamental frequency and the overtone spectrum.
Roll - animate the spectrum
Due to the stereo nature of the Polygogo oscillator, the module offers a great perception of space without adding external effects. To animate the spectra of the two channels and create spatial movement, Roll rotates the object around the centre and animates the waves.
Operator - modulate with precise ratios
A benefit to the digital makeup of the Polygogo module is precise frequency tracking for linear FM modulation. Here, the built-in operator modulates the fundamental frequency for FM madness. FM Ratio is settable, FM Amount goes from subtle growls in the lows to aliasing madness at high frequencies. Ratio can also be quantised to source.
Fold - overflow waves to the other side
Another happy accident of developing polygonal synthesis, the Fold parameter overflows the wave to the other side. This results in a tickling noise at low settings and crushing and slicing the waveform to total distortion when fully turned up.
