Harmonic, Power Tube, and Photocell Tremolos
The pedal features three distinct tremolos to choose from, each designed to offer sonically complex, harmonically rich effects. The first tremolo is a ’61 Harmonic, which delivers a dual-band filtering effect that emphasizes the low and high frequencies to create soothing pulses with shades of a mild phaser. The second featured tremolo is the ’63 power tube, which uses the LFO signal to directly influence the push-pull stage, creating a fluctuating gain that produces a dirty, bog type effect. The last featured tremolo is the ’65 photocell which recreates classic photo-tremolo circuits, delivering an effect with hard characteristics the move between two levels, mimicking a square wave.
Spring Tank, Electronic Plate, and Hall Rach Reverbs
Using unique reverb algorithms, Strymon have designed the Flint with three unique, vintage reverbs that deliver high quality effects. The 60’s spring tank reverb offers a recreation of a full-sized two-spring tank that was commonly used in vintage amps. This reverb delivers an incredibly complex reverb, thanks to the segments of different delay times that add plenty of layers to the effect. The 70’s electronic plate reverb pays homage to early digital reverbs, offering multiple delay lines in a parallel configuration, with each delay having multiple output taps and filter feedback paths to deliver a rich, smooth reverb with a quick build-up time. The last reverb is an 80’s hall rack, which is inspired by 80’s digital microprocessor rack reverbs, delivering a dense, warm reverb with distinct reflections and a slow build-up.
Controls and Secondary Functions
The Flint features 5 control knobs that can be used to tweak 8 different parameters, giving you control over the effects characteristics and shape. The intensity control is used to dial in the amount of depth the tremolo has, whilst its second function is used to give the Tremolo +/-3db of boot or cut. The mix controls the amount of wet to dry mix the pedal delivers, whilst the secondary function offers +/-3dB of boost or cut to the reverb. The speed knob control’s the speed of the LFO frequency, changing it from slow to fast. Its second function controls the tap subdivisions of an external tap pedal, acting as a 4 position switch that changes the pedals subdivisions.
The decay control shapes the time light of the reverb, changing it from short to long, while the second function acts as a two position switch that changes the order of the effects. By twisting the knob to the left, the pedal produces the reverb before the tremolo, and switch to the right makes the pedal produce the tremolo before the reverb. Lastly the colour knob controls the reverb’s tone, going from dark to light.
