The Teenage Engineering OP-Z is Finally Here!
After much anticipation, the Teenage Engineering OP-Z standalone sequencer and synthesizer is now available for order at Gear4music.
At NAMM 2016, Teenage Engineering unveiled a prototype product with a compact and playful design, similar to the OP-1. Since then, the OP-Z has made numerous appearances at trade shows around the world, in continued states of development but never quite complete.
Now Teenage Engineering has finally released the finalised OP-Z, and it's available to order from Gear4music!
This product has been hotly anticipated and, by the sounds of it, the wait has been worth it…
"Over the last year we have re-worked and re-thought in absurdum, but now when three long years of development have finally come to an end, we feel quite confident that you will actually thank us for that extra-long wait.
Why? You might ask…because the result is just pretty, pretty great… today, with the introduction of the new OP-Z, we will push the boundaries even further." - Teenage Engineering.
Teenage Engineering OP-Z: About
The OP-Z is a compact sequencer/synthesizer that builds on the success of the miniature OP-1 but with even more power and creative potential. The OP-Z features more DSP power but requires less energy, letting you create more complex music on the move, for longer than ever before.
The OP-Z allows you to create advanced sequences with a wide range of built-in sounds. The 16 tracks run completely independently with separate speed and duration. Each step in the 16-step sequence can be modified with a separate behaviour - a process called "Step Components".
With 14 components and 10 values available per step, every single step has access to 140 ways to alter the sound! Along with this huge sonic potential, the OP-Z features back-lit LED lights and a special glow-in-the-dark paint, making standalone use of the OP-Z a very real proposition for mobile musicians and performers.
Bring Your Own Screen
The OP-Z can also be connected to a mobile device. The free OP-Z app (iOS) adds colourful graphics and a clear user interface to your working process. The app allows video/photo integration for VJs, letting you take photos and arrange them to a beat - essentially creating your own music video on-the-fly.
By adding any artwork or photo to your camera roll or to a Dropbox folder, you can create custom graphics, patterns, colour pallets, or stop motion videos that can be animated in sync with your music.
Teenage Engineering has worked closely with Keijiro Takahashi and the Unity Tokyo studio to make the OP-Z compatible with the Unity 3D game engine. With Keijiro-San's personally developed tools and shaders, stunning 3D graphics can be created and used at full-speed on an iPhone or iPad. This allows musicians and VJs to integrate immersive motion graphics and VR into their live performances. The Unity 3D software support takes the OP-Z far beyond its sequencer/synthesizer remit, and makes this device a compact solution for integrating into a live VJ setup.
