Rock music 'should not sound too slick'

Musicians who play in rock bands have been told to avoid making their music sound too slick and polished.

br /> Martin Chambers, the drummer in The Pretenders, stated that rock 'n' roll tends to be much better when it has a raw edge.

Speaking to Asbury Park Press, he said the music needs to sound slightly out of control to make it come alive.

Chambers went on to outline some of the elements that have helped The Pretenders remain successful over three decades, such as the interplay between him and electric guitar player Chrissie Hynde.

He revealed that he unconsciously tries to hold the tempo back when he believes a song is starting to surge ahead.

"It's kind of an argument between her right hand and my drum kit," Chambers commented.

"Part of the Pretenders sound is that variance between her rhythm and mine."

The veteran rock band, who recently released a new album, are perhaps best known for their hits Brass in Pocket and 2,000 Miles.
