Recent Study Indicates That Compressed Audio Formats May Impact Emotional State

Compressed MP3 may negatively effect emotional wellbeing
Recent research has uncovered the effects that low-quality compression formats may have upon the brain's production of both positive and negative emotions.

The study which was conducted by the Audio Engineering Library, dictates that MP3's and similar low-quality compression formats may have a profound impact upon the "timbral and emotional characteristics" of the instruments that are featured within music.

The study provided a comparison of both compressed and uncompressed music samples over 10 different emotional categories. The study concluded that negative and neutral emotions such as shyness, fear and sadness were heightened when used in a compressed format.Compressed audio was also found to diminish emotions often associated with positivity such as happiness, heroism ,romanticism and calmness.

Oddly, individuals who participated in the study were found to be largely unresponsive to the emotion of anger, with levels remaining relatively consistent throughout. This conundrum was attributed to the possibility the MP3 compression producing a dull background growl often associated with low-quality compression. This low growl may cloak or otherwise steady an individuals anger level.

The instruments said to be most affected by compression were the trumpet and the horn. With the trumpet being the most and the horn being the least.
