REM 'going back to roots for new album'
REM are returning to their roots for their next album, it has been suggested.
According to Ken Stringfellow, frontman of The Posies and friend of REM's bass guitar player Mike Mills, the new record has an "old school feel" to it.
The musician was given a sneak preview of the album when he met up with Mills in Paris recently, reports NME.
Stringfellow, who has toured and worked with the band in the past, said: "What's cool about classic REM is that you have an electric and acoustic guitar coming along like The Byrds.
"There's a lot of that in there, there's some piano songs too."
The album is expected to be released at some point in 2011.
Earlier this year, REM's Peter Buck was involved in a side-project with Snow Patrol singer Gary Lightbody.
Last month, their group - named Tired Pony – released their debut album The Places We Ran From.
