NAMM 2020 | Twisted Electrons Release a MEGAfm Drive
NAMM 2020 | Twisted Electrons spins into FM synthesizers
From the fuzzed-out chiptune basslines, to delicately modulating dreamscapes, the MEGAfm isn't a gimmick, and it’s here to stay. The MEGAfm runs on dual YM2612 FM chips which are the same ones found in the original Sega Mega Drive consoles. That’s 12 voices of FM for you to use and abuse.
Have you ever had to use an FM synth? They are notorious for janky menus displayed on a tiny LCD. The people at Twisted Electrons also thought this and have given us 32 sliders, 14 knobs and 15 buttons. Not only does this make logical sense, but it makes it ridiculously fun to use. You also have access to three LFOs which you can assign to any parameter!
Another feature of the MEGAfm is that is has a Roland SH 101 style sequencer. This gives it a musical and old-school approach to sequencing. You can use the ARP with the sequencer and transpose as and when you need to. If there is one thing you could lose here, it’s a lot of time.
It also has four voicing modes: Poly12, Stereo/wide6, special CH3 mode, and a 12-voice unison mode (with detune/fat control). This will, again, open up the options of this synth.
Are you the kind of person who wants the sounds without the hassle of programming? Well, there are 50 pre-sets available with countless more you will be able to download from your computer using SYSEX.
The implementation of the two chips is great. In mono, it sums both chips but in stereo it uses one chip per channel which is a nice touch.
