NAMM 2019 | The New Arturia MicroFreak. "Get Your Freak On".
The Arturia MicroFreak is a paraphonic hybrid analogue/digital synthesizer at an "unprecedented price."
The MicroFreak is here to join the rest of the Arturia Micro synth family as the first-ever Arturia digital hardware synthesizer. New for NAMM 2019, the MicroFreak is a powerful yet affordable instrument which (in Arturia's words), "will both inspire newcomers with its ease of use and great sound, and also excite experienced players with its unusual, quirky features."
The Arturia MicroFreak combines the best of analog and digital technologies. Blending wavetable and digital oscillators, MicroFreak is able to deliver all manner of synthesis techniques with its multi-mode digital oscillator and Oberheim SEM-inspired analog filter. 7 of the oscillator modes have been created in collaboration with Eurorack-legends Mutable Instruments, giving you the iconic Plaits module in the convenience of an all-in-one hardware synth.
With both analog and digital technologies available, the MicroFreak is almost like having multiple synths in one device. The modes include Superwave, Harmonic Oscillator, Karplus-Strong, Wavetable, Virtual Analog, Waveshaper, FM, Grain, Chords, Speech, and Modal; plenty for adventurous musicians to explore new possibilities.
One of the most obvious and unique features of the MicroFreak is its distinct keyboard. With no moving parts, this PCB keyboard is pressure sensitive, super-reactive, and even offers poly-aftertouch. With the ability to use the MicroFreak as a USB-MIDI controller, as well as outputting CV, users can exploit this unique keyboard on express-enabled software instruments and external hardware.
With multiple features that belie its low price point, the MicroFreak offers huge potential for creativity. It includes a multi-point modulation matrix, a unique sequencer-arpeggiator with controlled randomness, and a clear OLED screen. Furthermore, the 128 factory presets provide a range of sounds to spark your creativity, while 64 user slots are provided to store your favourite creations.
As Arturia says, "MicroFreak is both a superb contender for "my first synth", as well as an intriguing 2nd, 3rd, or 15th synth for the collector or experimental sound designer."
MicroFreak will contain 11 oscillator types at launch, with the potential for future additions through firmware updates. MicroFreak is currently in production and due to arrive at retailers from April 1st 2019 (Arturia promises it isn’t an April Fool's joke!).
