NAMM 2018: EarthQuaker Devices Effects Pedal Updates and New Westwood Overdrive
EarthQuaker Devices continues to develop its line of guitar effects pedals with 5 new updates and a brand new translucent overdrive pedal. Each new V2 update features new 'Flexi' switching, giving access to both momentary and latching operation. The pedals also have true bypass with silent soft-touch switches and individually updated sound features.
The brand-new EarthQuaker Devices Westwood Translucent Overdrive Pedal delivers a wide range of overdriven sounds, from clean boosts right through to saturated lead tones.
All of the EarthQuaker Devices (EQD) pedals are assembled, wired and tested by hand in Akron, Ohio, U.S.A. They feature quality analogue signal paths and premium components to last a life of gigging and recording. The company's user-base has grown hugely over the past few years so let's have a more detailed look at how these new pedals will help to continue that trend.
The EarthQuaker Devices Avalanche Run V2 Delay & Reverb takes the stereo reverb and delay-based ambient tones of the Dispatch Master pedal to the next level, whilst still maintaining user-friendly operation. It has a high-powered DSP to produce expansive sounds and the new V2 version has an updated algorithm which produces an even better stereo image. This pedal is called a " dreamy sonic discovery device" by EQD and has 2 seconds of delay, 3 modes of operation (normal/reverse/swell), and an expression pedal input for control over your choice of 6 different controls. If even has a 'Hold' mode where, if you hold down the Tap control, the pedal will self-oscillate for some unique sound creation.
The EarthQuaker Devices Rainbow Machine V2 Pitch Shifting Harmonizer uses a modern DSP to create futuristic polyphonic pitch shifting, from a major 3rd up to a perfect 4th below. It can also create thick doubling, lush chorus, unique delay sounds and wild polyphonic harmonies. The new V2 model has a flexi-switch to enable momentary operation, while the circuit has been re-designed making it "more versatile, twice as loud as the original, with an extended delay time, deeper chorus tones, …and best of all, [it] has more Magic!" -EQD
The EarthQuaker Devices Hoof Reaper V2 Octave Fuzz is a dual fuzz and octave effect that combines three of EQD's popular pedals; the EQD Hoof Fuzz Pedal, Tone Reaper and EQD Tentacle Octave Pedal. It is a simple to use device that can create many types of fuzz sound. The new V2 version adds a flexi-switch to enable you to jump in and out of fuzz/octave effect modes in an instant; perfect for octave solos and riffs. The Hoof circuit produces a fuzz effect based on the 'Russian Muff' pedal from EHX, while the Tone Reaper circuit creates a vintage-style fuzz based on the classic 'Tone Bender' pedal. The analogue octave effect pairs with these two fuzz sounds to unleash everything from classic Hendrix-inspired tones to all-out screaming and squelching doomsday device sounds.
The EarthQuaker Devices The Depths V2 Optical Vibe Machine is a classic optical vibe pedal that is suitable for all kinds of instruments, and is designed to work well with a distorted sound too. It can add a low-end pulse with the "Throb" control that sounds great with synths and bass guitars. The pedal has enough control to allow you to create anything from a smooth ultra-slow warble to sharp, speedy burst sounds. The new V2 flexi-switch allows this pedal to be operated momentarily for some unique sounds, while the 18v optional power can provide increased headroom and sparkle.
The EarthQuaker Devices Spatial Delivery V2 Envelope Filter provides the classic sound of funk music. The filter is controlled by you playing dynamics, or can be set to a random voltage control for some unique and unpredictable bleep sounds. This pedal has 3 filter modes for a versatile range of filtered tones.
The brand new EarthQuaker Devices Westwood Translucent Overdrive lets you create anything from a clean boost through to a soaring lead sound. It has a very wide gain range that can be used in a multitude of contexts – whether that be boosting the input of an overdriven valve amp, providing a stand-alone solution to gain creation, getting that 'edge-of-breakup' sound, or creating singing lead tones with pleasing even-order harmonics and thick sustain. This pedal also has a versatile EQ section allowing you to sympathetically and musically sculpt your tone, whilst never becoming harsh or unusable.
