The Les Paul guitar-inspired Google doodle commemorating what would have been the music innovator's 96th birthday has cost businesses around the world £166 million in lost productivity, according to ExtremeTech.

Google currently has around 740 million visitors – or users – a day accessing its homepage. According to the online technology news provider, on the two days that the Google doodle was up, those 740 million visitors spent "26 seconds more" on the home page than normal.

With a simple mathematical calculation, ExtremeTech worked out that a total of 10.7 million hours was spent "playing the electric guitar" instead of actually working.

Moreover, the doodle in itself was a costly endeavour as it was heavily reliant on a big flash file for sound playback. Otherwise, it was a routine enough design using lightweight HTML5 and JavaScript.

Born in Wisconsin, Les Paul started off playing the harmonica before moving onto the characteristically American banjo.

He finally fell in love with the guitar, although it was his frustration with the electric guitars of the 30s that led him down the road of becoming an inventor.

Although he was responsible for laying the foundations of rock and roll, Les Paul himself was a keen jazz guitarist and enthusiast.
