Heavy metal guitarists have been advised to use an electric guitar that is suitable for the genre.

br /> According to Jeff Tandy of the Examiner, certain types of guitar are wholly inappropriate to playing in a heavy metal band.

For instance, he said a person could not expect to impress anyone if they play Slayer on a Fender Telecaster.

Mr Tandy has therefore recommended that electric guitar players who specialise in heavy metal opt for brands such as BC Rich, which is behind models such as the Mockingbird and the Beast.

People who favour BC Rich electric guitars could also choose from models such as the Kerry King Wartribe, the Revenge Warlock and the IT Speed V Laser Flame.

Mr Tandy said people who know how to wield one of these instruments on stage will see their credibility among the audience "jump exponentially".

"Good metal guitars are robustly designed to take a beating and the best ones are pointier than a pile of broken glass," he added
