Guns N' Roses star: Teaching others can improve electric guitar skills
Electric guitar players who are already proficient on the instrument can improve their skills further by teaching less experienced musicians.
This is the advice of Ron 'Bumblefoot' Thal, an electric guitarist for Guns N' Roses, who told the Gibson website he was engaged in this line of work during his 20s.
Thal said teaching others increases the repertoire of electric guitar players, as well as getting them to think more deeply about the way in which they use the instrument.
"What happens is that everything you're teaching, you're also learning," he explained.
"You're learning songs that you can teach, so now suddenly you have a great repertoire if you want to join a cover band. Everything helps everything else."
He added that some of the solo tracks he has created in the past came about as a direct result of something that occurred in one of his lessons.
It has been a busy year for Thal as Guns N' Roses have been touring the world in the latter part of 2010.
In addition to headlining the Reading and Leeds festivals, they have also played gigs in Italy, France, Austria and Spain.
