Facebook users aim to get The Smiths to chart summit
Facebook users succeeded in getting thrashy electric guitars to the top of the Christmas charts last year, banding together to give Rage Against The Machine a festive number one at the expense of Joe McElderry.
And it seems the success of this campaign has inspired other Facebook users to launch similar initiatives for their own causes.
Subscribers are being asked to download How Soon Is Now? by The Smiths at the end of the month.
This would get the song in the charts on the 25th anniversary of the release of their Meat Is Murder album.
"If anyone deserves a UK number one it is The Smiths," the Facebook group stated.
"Their contribution to British culture is outstanding."
However, the group currently consists of just over 7,000 members, which means it could still have a way to go before it dents the charts.
The Smith, whose distinctive sound was characterised by Johnny Marr's Rickenbacker guitar playing, notched up a string of hits in the 1980s including This Charming Man and Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now.
However, they never topped the singles charts during their career.Posted on 12 Jan 2010 21:00 to category : Music News
