Drummer supports easing live music restrictions
Electric guitar players, bassists and drummers could find it easier to get pub gigs if one campaigner gets his way.
Hamish Birchall, who plays the drum kit on a semi-professional basis, said live music in pubs is "central" to the live music scene.
However, he believes the sector is being harmed by excessive regulation outlined in the Licensing Act.
"It is dying out as hosts are getting tangled up in licensing," he told the Morning Advertiser.
Liberal Democrat peer Lord Clement-Jones has been among those to call for existing licensing laws to be relaxed for smaller venues.
He wants pubs with a capacity of less than 200 to be exempt from the need to apply for a music licence.
Lord Clement Jones added that the existing system imposes some "quite ridiculous" conditions on smaller venues.
Earlier this month, the government confirmed it is considering revising the rules to allow performances for 100 people or less to be staged without the venue applying for a licence.
Licensing minister Gerry Sutcliffe said the government is very keen to do what it can to support both audiences and musicians.Posted on 14 Jan 2010 15:00 to category : Music News
