Boris Johnson puts support behind more live music
Boris Johnson, the mayor of London, has put his support behind the need for more live music in London and across the country.
Speaking to BBC 6 Music, Johnson said that there was "too much red tape" in the current system, which means pubs and clubs wishing to hold live music have to apply through a "strict licensing system".
The mayor urged the collation government to change the system, which, because of its lengthy and awkward application process, simply puts people off from even applying at all.
The government is now on its ninth consultation surrounding live music venues and still undecided about what course of action to take.
Johnson told 6 Music: "There is a particular clause, 696, that is particularly controversial and I have gone over this, time and time again with the Met to show some flexibility there. We do think they are moving. I really hope that the coalition government do what people want them to do and get rid of that burden."
He also revealed in the interview that as city centre rental prices continue to rise in London, more and more independent venues could face possible closure.
Johnson recently launched a new music scholarship fund in London to help prodigious young musicians realise their dreams.
