International Jazz Day is a chance to celebrate the incredible diversity of jazz culture! While the stereotypical view of jazz music may be that of an elite group of virtuoso musicians, the reality of jazz today is a huge range of styles that are as relevant now as they were in the early 20th century.

We decided to celebrate International Jazz Day with our very own video. We took a recent pop song and created our own little-big-band arrangement, featuring some of our highly talented members of staff!

What is Jazz Music?

The jazz genre includes the dance styles of New Orleans, ragtime, Dixieland, and Afro-Cuban. It includes the virtuosic styles of bebop, Gypsy jazz, blues, funk, and rock fusion. It features the smooth styles of swing, big band, and bossa nova. Jazz also includes the modern scenes of neo soul, hip hop, nu jazz, and much, much more.

In short, jazz has become an incredible musical language that has influenced almost every style of modern western music.

What is International Jazz Day?

International Jazz Day was created to celebrate jazz and its ability to unite people around the globe. Celebrated on 30th April, International Jazz Day is the culmination of Jazz Appreciation Month. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has officially designated this day to celebrate the Jazz culture.

How Do I Get Into Jazz?

With the huge range of jazz styles, the best place you can start with jazz is on YouTube! Search for the best jazz performances, the newest jazz styles, the most famous jazz musicians, and the most contemporary jazz performers. You may be surprised to find that jazz isn’t exactly how you imagined.

Once you’ve found the styles of jazz you enjoy listening to, you’ll be able to start learning jazz in the most efficient way. Find a teacher, search online resources, learn your music theory, buy some books, and never stop learning!

Where Did Jazz Originate? The Crossword Answer!

Jazz originated in New Orleans in the early 20th century. Jazz grew out of blues and ragtime styles, with its roots going back even further through to African and European styles.
