Akai Professional’s MPC Range Now Features MIDI Multi Capability with Firmware 2.8

Available from 14th May, MPC Firmware 2.8 gives Akai Professional MPC users access to MIDI Multi technology, making your MPC a true studio-sequencing centrepiece

The Akai Professional MPC range is once again treated to another game-changing update, in the form of firmware 2.8!

Available from 14th May, MPC Firmware 2.8 gives Akai Professional MPC users access to MIDI Multi technology. So, what does this mean for MPC users, and what is MIDI Multi?

What is MIDI Multi?

MIDI Multi allows you to make your MPC a complete MIDI-sequencing standalone hub. You can now use any class-compliant MIDI device with your MPC standalone. USB Keyboards, MIDI Interfaces, and USB to CV modules; everything integrates directly, dramatically increasing the I/O of your MPC Live, MPC X, or MPC One!

This update allows you to run up to a staggering 32 MIDI devices simultaneously, when using a high-quality powered USB hub. You can connect even more if you add a 5-pin MIDI to USB converter.

It’s easy to keep control of your MIDI devices via the Input and Output port sections on your MPC. Track and control all your MIDI devices with Master, Control, and Track features on the Input Port, and enable Sync and Enable Track on the Output Port.

What else is new in MPC Firmware 2.8?

Send MIDI to Tracks

MIDI Multi offers a wealth of possibilities. If you’re fortunate enough to have a vast collection of synthesisers and drum machines, this really is the perfect update for you.

On MPC 2.8, you can now send MIDI to different tracks, meaning you can layer sound generators – whether that is internally within your Akai MPC module, or to an external synthesizer.

Export Chord Progressions

Connect an external keyboard to the MPC via MIDI and record a chord progression directly to your standalone system. Once this has been done, you can save and export your progression type.

Go into your newly saved Chord Progression, and you can change the root note, scale type, and even customise the chords you’ve just played in; with the option to preview changes at the touch of a button. Save, export, and import these chord progressions and store them on your MPC standalone system, giving you a range of styles on the go.

Retrospective Recording

How many times have you been jamming, gone to hit record, and then totally forgotten what you were playing? Retrospective recording is here to solve that problem for good.

With 2.8, the MPC is always recording, even when you forget to press the big, red button. All MIDI events are recorded seamlessly in the background. You can access this function by hitting shift and record simultaneously, go to grid, and what you have just played will be mapped to the grid. You can then quantize, add, and amend what you just recorded!
