Ableton Live 10 - Long Awaited Software With New Features
At its core, Live 10 is a fully integrated digital audio workstation with audio, midi, and sound creation capabilities, along with live hardware integration. The new version of the software brings many layout tweaks to help improve workflow, allowing the user to edit MIDI and audio from directly within the arranger window, alongside creating groups-within-groups for more refined mixing. Themes have also been re-designed to give a sleeker more contemporary look.
Live 10 brings a new synth on-board called Wavetable. As its name suggests, it uses waveforms to model sounds based on analogue synths and other instruments. This should provide the potential for Live 10 to compete with the other synth programs available on the market. Elsewhere, a new sound library with "richer, more detailed sounds" alongside a new file management system which promises to deliver new audio options and a more organised way of working.
Other sound creation features include the new Echo, Pedal, and Drum Buss effects. Echo provides ambient delays reminiscent of analogue and digital devices, while Pedal adds circuit-level modelling to provide thick overdrive tones which, judging by the Ableton demos, appears to work just as well on guitar as it does on other instruments. Drum Buss promises to be an all in one solution for shaping drum sounds and loops, which on the surface should be a nice quick workflow enhancing feature.
The real trump card of Live 10 is the integration of Max For Live, which was always previously available as an additional add-on feature. This will give great potential for live users of Ableton to integrate Live 10 into their setup, creating custom sound sets and sound-design potential at no extra cost. The new functionality for the Push Controller will also add useful features for the live player and recording artist.
After many years, Ableton has finally brought the Live platform up-to-date and it seems ready to hit the ground running and help refine musician's workflow and sound creation capabilities.
