Seriously, if you&#8217;ve watched any live Foo Fighters performance, you&#8217;ll know what I mean. Arms flying, hair all over the place, and giving it everything behind the kit. The man clearly loved playing the drums.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">But there was a lot more to Hawkins than simply hitting the drums really hard. He\u00a0<em>felt\u00a0<\/em>rock music and knew exactly what to bring to a song, whether that meant throwing in an explosive fill or settling into a groove. After deciding the guitar was a little too tricky for him to pick up, he sat down at a neighbour\u2019s rickety drum kit in 1982, played a basic beat, and was promptly told he was a drummer.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Around that same time, he discovered Queen\u2019s <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">News of the World<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">. Roger Taylor became his hero, and it\u2019s not hard to see why. He was a huge fan of Rush&#8217;s Neil Peart and The Police&#8217;s Stewart Copeland, too. Read any interview with Hawkins \u2014 chances are, you&#8217;ll find that he could talk about his favourite drummers for hours. Steve Perkins was another of his inspirations. Suddenly, he was performing in front of huge crowds around the world. Playing drums in a band fronted by Dave Grohl is another entirely.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Foo Fighters found themselves without a drummer in 1997. At that time, Hawkins was still touring the world with Alanis Morissette. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He was playing arenas night after night, so it\u2019s fair to say he already had a pretty good gig. After hearing that drummer William Goldsmith had left Foo Fighters, he called Grohl and said, \u201cI hear you\u2019re looking for a drummer.\u201d Grohl jokingly asked whether he knew anyone. Hawkins did: he wanted the job himself.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Grohl hadn\u2019t expected that answer. Hawkins was already playing huge shows with one of the world&#8217;s biggest artists, so joining Foo Fighters could have seemed like a step backwards. Fortunately, Hawkins didn\u2019t see it that way. Even though he was playing massive stadiums with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alanis Morissette<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, his heart was in rock music and joining Foo Fighters was the perfect fit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Grohl also quickly discovered that he wasn\u2019t just getting a phenomenal drummer. The pair had an immediate connection. Grohl said to radio station 95.5 KLOS in 2021 that meeting Hawkins was like finding his<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0\u201ctwin, best friend, or spirit animal\u201d.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">And that connection with Grohl turned out to be something pretty special. The two had a brilliant chemistry that became a huge part of Foo Fighters, both on and off the stage. But what I think makes Hawkins&#8217; story even more impressive is that he managed to carve out his own identity in a band fronted by one of rock&#8217;s most famous drummers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He wasn&#8217;t just the guy playing drums behind Dave Grohl. And if you want to hear what I mean, there are plenty of Foo Fighters songs that show it. Just listen to the way he builds up the intensity in \u201cThe Pretender\u201d, the unusual groove he brings to \u201cRope\u201d, or how he takes a more laid-back approach on \u201cAurora\u201d. He was a huge fan of Rush's Neil Peart and The Police's Stewart Copeland, too. Read any interview with Hawkins \u2014 chances are, you'll find that he could talk about his favourite drummers for hours. Steve Perkins was another of his inspirations. Speaking to <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Drum!<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> magazine in 2007, Hawkins described Perkins as his favourite drummer for years and \u201cthe last drummer I consciously emulated\u201d.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233117\":false,\"134233118\":false,\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":0,\"335551620\":0,\"335559738\":240,\"335559739\":240,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He was especially impressed by the way Perkins performed live: \u201cPerkins wasn't a showman, but he was showy. He had a lot of vibe live, and he was fun to watch,\" he said to <em>Drum!. <\/em><\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">All these influences helped Hawkins develop his own style, and it wasn't long before he got the chance to put everything he'd learnt into practice on a much bigger stage.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\"134233117\":false,\"134233118\":false,\"201341983\":0,\"335551550\":0,\"335551620\":0,\"335559738\":240,\"335559739\":240,\"335559740\":259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">That opportunity came when he landed the gig playing drums for Alanis Morissette on her <\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Jagged Little Pill<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> tour. Suddenly, he was performing in front of huge crowds around the world. Playing drums in a band fronted by Dave Grohl is another entirely.<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Foo Fighters found themselves without a drummer in 1997. At that time, Hawkins was still touring the world with Alanis Morissette. <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He was playing arenas night after night, so it\u2019s fair to say he already had a pretty good gig. Hawkins was already playing huge shows with one of the world's biggest artists, so joining Foo Fighters could have seemed like a step backwards. Fortunately, Hawkins didn\u2019t see it that way. Even though he was playing massive stadiums with <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Alanis Morissette<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, his heart was in rock music and joining Foo Fighters was the perfect fit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Grohl also quickly discovered that he wasn\u2019t just getting a phenomenal drummer. But what I think makes Hawkins' story even more impressive is that he managed to carve out his own identity in a band fronted by one of rock's most famous drummers. <\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">He wasn't just the guy playing drums behind Dave Grohl.
