The Universal Audio Volt Gen 2 series comes with a range of major upgrades, including the onboard Smart Display, Auto-Gain, and other tools to streamline your workflow. The names give you a starting point, but they don’t necessarily tell you how many preamps there are, so read on to see what’s included.

Volt 1 Gen 2 has one mic/line preamp plus a separate instrument input. Its four specified output channels cover stereo monitoring and a stereo headphone cue; they don’t mean four rear line sockets.

Volt 4 Gen 2 keeps two preamps, adds line connectivity, and introduces optical expansion. Its headline figure of 12 inputs includes up to eight ADAT channels supplied by external equipment, rather than 12 microphone sockets.

Volt 2 Max combines two preamps with onboard compression, optical expansion, talkback, and two headphone outputs. Volt 4 Max adds extra line connections and lets you switch between two pairs of monitors.

Finally, the Volt 4P Max comes equipped with four microphone preamps, making it a natural starting point for recording a group of people together. It also has the larger Max model’s monitor switching.

Compared with Gen 1, there’s far more scope to expand selected models. However, Volt 1 and Volt 2 Gen 2 lose the MIDI sockets found on the original models. Guitarists have plenty to explore here. The software bundle includes UAD Lion ’68 Super Lead Amp and UAD Showtime ’64 Tube Amp, alongside the Ampeg SVT-VR Classic Bass Bundle.

Plug your guitar or bass into a Hi-Z input, record into your computer, and use the appropriate plugin to shape the amplified sound. For bedroom recording, it’s very convenient. You can work through headphones, try different tones without repositioning a microphone, and revisit your amp settings later if you’ve recorded a clean track.

To hear the plugin while playing, use software monitoring in your recording app. Your computer, driver, and buffer settings affect the delay you hear, so this doesn’t mean you’ll get latency-free amp processing.

Additionally, the new preamps in the audio interfaces offer Warmth, Focus, and Shine, inspired by tube, solid-state, and British Class-A character respectively — serving a different purpose from the guitar amp plugins but giving you another starting point for shaping your recording.

Auto gain

Setting gain can interrupt a session before it’s even started. It sets recording levels in seconds, helping you establish a usable input level before you concentrate on the take. Volt 1 Gen 2 retains manual control.

We’d suggest still rehearsing the loudest part you expect to perform when setting your levels to give the interface a more representative signal. Listen back to a short test before committing to the song.

Then there’s Clip Protection. This helps with any unexpected peaks and supports you when the performance gets louder than you planned.

The original Volt desktop interfaces relied on manual gain adjustment and monitoring. So, this new feature is possibly the biggest selling point of the audio interfaces, especially for solo vocalists, creators moving between sources, and podcasters who want less technical setup between guests. However, we’d also just add that Auto-Gain isn’t compression, though the Max range includes onboard real-time compression.

Full colour smart displays

The full colour Smart Display shows inputs, levels, and settings, helping you see what’s happening without constantly turning back to your recording software.

You’ll find it on Volt 2 Gen 2, Volt 4 Gen 2, and every Max model. Their analog 76 Compressor drew inspiration from UA’s 1176, with VOC, GTR, and FAST presets to explore. Standard Gen 1 Volt models didn’t include it.

The new Max family develops that idea with onboard real-time compression and six musical presets. The 1176 and LA-2A are inspirations, with settings including “Rap Vocals” and “Jangly Acoustic”. These are great starting points for shaping a voice, guitar, or bass while recording.

Put simply, a compressor reduces the difference between the louder and quieter parts of a performance. It could help a vocal sit more evenly or give a bass part a more consistent presence. The right amount depends on the source and the song.

Pairing the six presets with Warmth, Focus and Shine provides 18 tone-and-compression combinations. You can explore different sounds without starting with a panel full of attack, release, and ratio controls. There’s an appealing immediacy to hearing a more controlled sound while performing.

However, Max processing applies compression at the source, so we’d say audition your chosen setting before recording.

If you prefer to make dynamics decisions during mixing, the bundled compressor plugins are a good alternative. Volt 1, Volt 2, and Volt 4 Gen 2 don’t have Max processing, but they can still use software compression.

More room to grow

Volt 4 Gen 2 and Max models offer optical expansion. The extra preamp flavours give you more sounds to experiment with, but features such as clearer metering, help with setting levels and expansion on selected models are likely to make a bigger difference day to day.

If you already own a Volt, think about what currently gets in the way when you’re recording. Maybe you need more microphone inputs, want built-in loopback, or have reached the point where optical expansion would be useful.

Those are great reasons to consider the new range. But if your current Volt already handles everything you record, the updated specifications alone probably aren’t a reason to replace it.

If you’re wondering if it can work as an alternative to Apollo, the included UAD Native plugins run on your computer, so buying a Volt doesn’t give you Apollo’s system for tracking through DSP-powered UAD plug-ins. The Max models’ onboard compression is also separate from the bundled software.

I wouldn’t get too caught up in which model has the biggest input number, either. Think about how many built-in preamps you’ll actually use, whether you need room to expand, and how you want to manage headphone mixes. For example, two headphone sockets sharing one cue mix won’t give two performers separate mixes.

[/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=”FAQs” _builder_version=”4.17.4″ background_size=”initial” background_position=”top_left” background_repeat=”repeat” custom_padding=”20px||||false|false” border_width_top=”2px” border_color_top=”#f08000″ global_colors_info=”{}”]

FAQs

Is the Universal Audio Volt good?

The Universal Audio Volt is a good audio interface for home and mobile recording.

Choose Volt 4 Gen 2 or a Max model if you need MIDI connectivity, which now uses Type A TRS mini-jacks.

Amp emulation

Now, amp emulation isn't new for the Volt, but the selection of software supplied is.

For bedroom recording, it's very convenient.

You sing a quiet verse, adjust the level, then hit the chorus and discover you’ve left too little headroom.

Auto-Gain tackles that setup job on Volt 2 Gen 2, Volt 4 Gen 2, and all three Max models. It sets recording levels in seconds, helping you establish a usable input level before you concentrate on the take. Volt 1 Gen 2 retains manual control.

We'd suggest still rehearsing the loudest part you expect to perform when setting your levels to give the interface a more representative signal. Listen back to a short test before committing to the song.

Then there's Clip Protection.

However, we'd also just add that Auto-Gain isn't compression, though the Max range includes onboard real-time compression.

Full colour smart displays

The full colour Smart Display shows inputs, levels, and settings, helping you see what’s happening without constantly turning back to your recording software.

You’ll find it on Volt 2 Gen 2, Volt 4 Gen 2, and every Max model. If you're a singer recording at a desk with a laptop, clear visual feedback makes things that little bit easier. If you're switching between a microphone and an instrument, seeing the selected channel and its settings is also a super useful feature.

The Max displays also show gain reduction, making compression easier to understand. Input meters tell you how much signal is coming in, while gain-reduction metering shows how strongly the compressor is acting on it.

Gen 1 used LEDs and physical controls, with more extensive metering on the 76 models. The new screen gives selected interfaces a clearer overview of their functions. Pair that with hands-on controls, and you’ve got a way to manage your recording without constantly having to focus on your computer.

Dynamic processing

Compression was already a selling point of the Volt 76 interfaces, and the Gen 2 incorporates the same dynamic sound shaping. Their analog 76 Compressor drew inspiration from UA’s 1176, with VOC, GTR, and FAST presets to explore. Standard Gen 1 Volt models didn’t include it.

The new Max family develops that idea with onboard real-time compression and six musical presets. The 1176 and LA-2A are inspirations, with settings including "Rap Vocals" and "Jangly Acoustic".

However, Max processing applies compression at the source, so we'd say audition your chosen setting before recording.

With compatible external equipment, ADAT adds eight channels at 44.1 or 48 kHz, four at 96 kHz, and two at 192 kHz.

The range also gains loopback and 32-bit conversion, while preamp gain increases from 55 dB to 60 dB. Max models add talkback and two headphone outputs that share a single cue mix, so check the routing options before choosing a model.

Who is the Volt Gen 2 suited to?

In a nutshell: musicians, producers, and bedroom producers. If you want straightforward recording and useful tone choices, the range is for you.

For a solo songwriter recording one microphone and a plugged-in instrument, we'd suggest the Volt 1 Gen 2. If you want to record an acoustic guitar through one microphone while singing into another, step up to a model with two preamps. An instrument input can’t replace that second mic connection.

Volt 2 Gen 2 is great for duets, stereo sources, and two-person interviews. Auto-Gain and the display can also be useful even if you usually record alone. Volt 2 Max adds compression, a second headphone output and talkback for working with another musician.

Producers using synths or outboard equipment, the Volt 4 Gen 2 and Volt 4 Max are for you. Their additional line connections offer more flexibility, while MIDI and optical expansion leave room for a growing setup.

Speaker switching on the Volt 4 Max also helps when comparing mixes across different monitors. Volt 4P Max is a good fit for recording small ensembles. Streamers and podcasters gain loopback throughout the range, with Max compression offering another way to control a voice at the source.

Author’s verdict: The workflow is the real upgrade

For me, the biggest change is how much easier UA has made the recording process.

If you're wondering if it can work as an alternative to Apollo, the included UAD Native plugins run on your computer, so buying a Volt doesn’t give you Apollo’s system for tracking through DSP-powered UAD plug-ins.

FAQs

Is the Universal Audio Volt good?

The Universal Audio Volt is a good audio interface for home and mobile recording. It offers clean preamps, 24-bit/192 kHz conversion, direct monitoring, and analog Vintage mode, making it well suited to vocals, guitars, podcasts, and music production.

Do UAD plugins work with Volt?

UAD plugins work with Volt when using native UADx versions that run on your computer. Volt has no onboard UAD DSP, so DSP-only UAD plugins require Apollo or UAD-2 hardware. Volt interfaces also include a selection of native UAD plugins.

What are the differences between the Universal Audio Volt 2 and Volt 276?

The differences between the Universal Audio Volt 2 and Volt 276 mainly involve analog compression. Both offer two inputs, Vintage mode, and 24-bit/192 kHz audio, but the Volt 276 adds two channels of built-in 76 compression inspired by UA's 1176.

Final thoughts

The Universal Audio Volt Gen 2 builds on the original range with more ways to shape your sound, a simpler setup on selected models, and more options for expanding your studio.

The best fit comes down to what you record and which features will genuinely be useful in your setup. Whether you’re working on ideas by yourself or recording several musicians, there’s a Volt designed to suit different recording needs.

[247,260,121
290,554,104
post-52584","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-studio-guides","category-studio-new-releases","category-studio-production","tag-guide","tag-new-launch","tag-studio-production

Universal Audio Volt Gen 2 vs. Gen 1 – What’s Changed?
