This year\u2019s Sesh took place in early August, set against the breezy backdrop of Hull\u2019s marina.<\/p>\n<p>There are multiple stages at the festival, from the BBC Introducing stage tucked away in the bar Social (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/blog\/fiona-lee-on-her-crazy-year-stage-setup-and-playing-with-a-band\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">where we interviewed Fiona-Lee<\/a><\/strong>) to the Cuban Pete\u2019s Stage to, of course, the Main Stage, where <strong>The Howl and the Hum<\/strong> rounded out the day.<\/p>\n<p>Their headlining set was a brilliant showcase of perceptive storytelling, indie head-bangers, and calmer, folk-inspired moments. Oh, and there was a saxophone, too, a defining feature of Sam Griffith\u2019s second album, <em>Same Mistake Twice<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Sam Griffiths <em>is <\/em>The Howl and the Hum; he\u2019s the founder and the common thread through the band\u2019s changing lineups \u2013 in fact, <em>Same Mistake Twice <\/em>documents the emotions and aftermath of the original band\u2019s break-up in 2023. But for those who have nurtured their talent and honed their craft in and around Hull, like The Howl and the Hum have, it\u2019s a truly special place.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHull has always been very kind to us\u2026 To be honoured with the headline slot is still kind of crazy,\u201d says Sam Giffiths, as he knows how great the rich music scene of the city is, almost unbeknownst to anyone outside of Yorkshire, and the significance it has for many artists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re all delighted to be here in Hull today for Humber Street Sesh. We\u2019ve been looking forward to it and rehearsing for a couple of months,\u201d bassist Naomi Macleod tells us.<\/p>\n<p>[\/et_pb_text][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;The Howl and the Hum rig&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.17.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;20px||||false|false&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; border_width_top=&#8221;2px&#8221; border_color_top=&#8221;gcid-45928375-1fd3-4d7e-b1f0-0adee316b54f&#8221; global_colors_info=&#8221;{%22gcid-45928375-1fd3-4d7e-b1f0-0adee316b54f%22:%91%22border_color_top%22%93}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Howl_and_the_Hum_rig\"><\/span>The Howl and the Hum rig<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n<h4><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Guitar_setup_Sam_Griffiths\"><\/span>Guitar setup (Sam Griffiths)<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>All of the band&#8217;s songs are written on an acoustic guitar or piano, but their sound and textures are filled out with an array of gear, sometimes intricately, sometimes heavily, inspired by ambient music. \u201cIt\u2019s about building it up from its truest emotional place,\u201d Griffiths paints the picture of how his songs turn from a folk-style idea to a rich, textured song.<\/p>\n<p>Pedals are a huge part of this; they make a wavelength sound \u201cmore human; like it\u2019s breathing.\u201d Griffiths uses the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/JHS-Pedals-Crayon-Direct-In-Distortion\/1FC5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JHS Pedals Crayon drive<\/a><\/strong> (\u201cthe craziest distortion pedal\u201d) and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Electro-Harmonix-POG-2-Polyphonic-Octave-Generator\/B69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Electro Harmonix POG 2<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But still, even with the electric guitars, the saxophone, and the fullness of the mix, each track\u2019s core still shines through, with its storytelling leading the way. It\u2019s indie, as Griffiths reminds us, so it\u2019s all about keeping the true signal of the guitar. As she tells us, Charvel basses can meet the demands of Macleod\u2019s various playing styles.<\/p>\n<p>With her at Humber Street Sesh, she has a Pro Mod So Cal 4 in a cream finish, loaded with hot DiMarzio pickups (for The Howl and the Hum, she tends to just use the neck pickup) and a PJ configuration. It\u2019s a versatile bass that suits the more aggressive style of Macleod\u2019s playing in other bands and the softer, calmer playing of The Howl and the Hum, all aided by the push\/pull active vs. passive pot.<\/p>\n<p>Adding to that versatility is the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Line-6-Helix-HX-Stomp-Multi-Effects-Pedal\/40YR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Line 6 Helix Stomp<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cThere\u2019s obviously been many successors to it that, rightly, everyone\u2019s talking about,\u201d Macleod explains, \u201cFender have the Tone Master, [there\u2019s the] Kemper Profiler, Neural DSP are doing incredible work. And somehow the HX Stomp still mostly stands up against its competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The unit gives her massively wide-ranging sounds to hand; the presets keep things quick to call on and mean she can dial in pretty much any tone she needs. First up is the POG 2 for \u201cmostly octave stuff and the attack features, so you can take out the attack and make it sound a lot more synth-like.\u201d He also uses the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Line-6-DL4-MKII-Delay-Pedal\/4QKZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Line 6 DL4 MkII <\/a><\/strong>for delay, reverb, and the looper (used for writing), though it\u2019s so complex and offers so much that \u201cit\u2019d take a lifetime to figure out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Fairfield Shallow Water chorus vibrato pedal is another key element of Thava\u2019s sound. Unlike other chorus vibratos, its timing fluctuates, meaning there\u2019s no strict rigidity \u2013 you choose a range and the effect \u201cwobbles in its own time universe,\u201d as Thava puts it.<\/p>\n<p>Taking raw, introspective songs written on an acoustic guitar and piano, turning them into headlining hits, and still retaining the heart they had at the very beginning is no mean feat, but the Crayon helps with this. This year\u2019s Sesh took place in early August, set against the breezy backdrop of Hull\u2019s marina.<\/p><p>There are multiple stages at the festival, from the BBC Introducing stage tucked away in the bar Social (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/blog\/fiona-lee-on-her-crazy-year-stage-setup-and-playing-with-a-band\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">where we interviewed Fiona-Lee<\/a><\/strong>) to the Cuban Pete\u2019s Stage to, of course, the main stage, where <strong>The Howl and the Hum<\/strong> rounded out the day.<\/p><p>Their headlining set was a brilliant showcase of perceptive storytelling, indie head-bangers, and calmer, folk-inspired moments. But for those who have nurtured their talent and honed their craft in and around Hull, like The Howl and the Hum have, it\u2019s a truly special place.<\/p><p>\u201cHull has always been very kind to us\u2026 To be honoured with the headline slot is still kind of crazy,\u201d says Sam Giffiths, as he knows how great the rich music scene of the city is, almost unbeknownst to anyone outside of Yorkshire, and the significance it has for many artists.<\/p><p>\u201cWe\u2019re all delighted to be here in Hull today for Humber Street Sesh. We\u2019ve been looking forward to it and rehearsing for a couple of months,\u201d bassist Naomi Macleod tells us.<\/p><hr \/><h3>The Howl and the Hum rig<\/h3><h4>Guitar setup (Sam Griffiths)<\/h4><p>All of the band's songs are written on an acoustic guitar or piano, but their sound and textures are filled out with an array of gear, sometimes intricately, sometimes heavily, inspired by ambient music. \u201cIt\u2019s about building it up from its truest emotional place,\u201d Griffiths paints the picture of how his songs turn from a folk-style idea to a rich, textured song.<\/p><p>Pedals are a huge part of this; they make a wavelength sound \u201cmore human; like it\u2019s breathing.\u201d Griffiths uses the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/JHS-Pedals-Crayon-Direct-In-Distortion\/1FC5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">JHS Pedals Crayon drive<\/a><\/strong> (\u201cthe craziest distortion pedal\u201d) and the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Electro-Harmonix-POG-2-Polyphonic-Octave-Generator\/B69\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Electro Harmonix POG 2<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p><p>But still, even with the electric guitars, the saxophone, and the fullness of the mix, each track\u2019s core still shines through, with its storytelling leading the way. It\u2019s indie, as Griffiths reminds us, so it\u2019s all about keeping the true signal of the guitar. He loves the Fender Tele and he\u2019s a huge fan of a small-bodied acoustic guitar, Martin in particular \u2013 it\u2019s small but loud.<\/p><p><img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47963\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-blog-g4m-co-uk\/2025\/10\/Sam-Griffiths-of-The-Howl-and-the-Hum.jpg\" alt=\"Sam Griffiths of The Howl and the Hum\" width=\"1330\" height=\"665\" \/><\/p><hr \/><h4>Bass setup (Naomi Macleod)<\/h4><p>It\u2019s not just The Howl and the Hum that bassist Naomi Macleod is part of; she\u2019s also involved in other projects, so she needs a bass that can keep up. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Electric_Guitars\/Charvel\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Charvel<\/a><\/strong> is the brand of choice. As she tells us, Charvel basses can meet the demands of Macleod\u2019s various playing styles.<\/p><p>With her at Humber Street Sesh, she has a Pro Mod So Cal 4 in a cream finish, loaded with hot DiMarzio pickups (for The Howl and the Hum, she tends to just use the neck pickup) and a PJ configuration. It\u2019s a versatile bass that suits the more aggressive style of Macleod\u2019s playing in other bands and the softer, calmer playing of The Howl and the Hum, all aided by the push\/pull active vs. passive pot.<\/p><p>Adding to that versatility is the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Line-6-Helix-HX-Stomp-Multi-Effects-Pedal\/40YR\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Line 6 Helix Stomp<\/a><\/strong>. \u201cThere\u2019s obviously been many successors to it that, rightly, everyone\u2019s talking about,\u201d Macleod explains, \u201cFender have the Tone Master, [there\u2019s the] Kemper Profiler, Neural DSP are doing incredible work. And somehow the HX Stomp still mostly stands up against its competition.\u201d<\/p><p>The unit gives her massively wide-ranging sounds to hand; the presets keep things quick to call on and mean she can dial in pretty much any tone she needs. It\u2019s a simple setup, but it\u2019s all-in-one unit and keeps things nice and easy on stage.<\/p><p><img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47962\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-blog-g4m-co-uk\/2025\/10\/Naomi-Macleod-of-The-Howl-and-the-Hum.jpg\" alt=\"Naomi Macleod of The Howl and the Hum\" width=\"1330\" height=\"665\" \/><\/p><hr \/><h4>Guitar setup (Arun Thava)<\/h4><p>Sam Griffiths might work on the guitar sounds, but Arun Thava really shapes the tone with a variety of pedals. First up is the POG 2 for \u201cmostly octave stuff and the attack features, so you can take out the attack and make it sound a lot more synth-like.\u201d He also uses the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Line-6-DL4-MKII-Delay-Pedal\/4QKZ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Line 6 DL4 MkII <\/a><\/strong>for delay, reverb, and the looper (used for writing), though it\u2019s so complex and offers so much that \u201cit\u2019d take a lifetime to figure out.\u201d<\/p><p>The Fairfield Shallow Water chorus vibrato pedal is another key element of Thava\u2019s sound. Unlike other chorus vibratos, its timing fluctuates, meaning there\u2019s no strict rigidity \u2013 you choose a range and the effect \u201cwobbles in its own time universe,\u201d as Thava puts it.<\/p><p>Taking raw, introspective songs written on an acoustic guitar and piano and turning them into headlining hits while retaining the heart they had at the very beginning is no mean feat, but the Crayon helps with this. The pedal gives an \u201calmost chewy overdriven sound\u201d that\u2019s perfect for the band\u2019s tone; it sounds natural \u2013 it breaks things up enough, but in a way that\u2019s not super heavy.<\/p><p>Guitar-wise, Thava uses the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gear4music.com\/Guitar-and-Bass\/Epiphone-ES-335-Vintage-Sunburst\/3HAW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gibson ES-335<\/a><\/strong>, which pairs beautifully with Griffiths\u2019 Tele, adding a darker tone with punchiness and bite that cuts through the mix.<\/p><p><img class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-47961\" src=\"https:\/\/storage.googleapis.com\/stateless-blog-g4m-co-uk\/2025\/10\/Arun-Thava-of-The-Howl-and-the-Hum.jpg\" alt=\"Arun Thava of The Howl and the Hum\" width=\"1330\" height=\"665\" \/><\/p><hr \/><h3>What\u2019s next?<\/h3><p>We concluded the day at Humber Street Sesh with The Howl and the Hum\u2019s set \u2013 watching all the gear they walked us through in action.
